Can anyone suggest how to proceed with this block:
Code:
# emerge -uD --ask world

 * Use eselect news read to view new items.

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

It may be possible to solve this problem by using package.mask to
prevent one of those packages from being selected. However, it is also
possible that conflicting dependencies exist such that they are
impossible to satisfy simultaneously.  If such a conflict exists in
the dependencies of two different packages, then those packages can
not be installed simultaneously. You may want to try a larger value of
the --backtrack option, such as --backtrack=30, in order to see if
that will solve this conflict automatically.

For more information, see MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge man
page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

mgnut57,

Lets start with
Code:
[blocks B      ] <sys-libs/glibc-2.26 ("<sys-libs/glibc-2.26" is blocking net-libs/libnsl-1.2.0, net-libs/rpcsvc-proto-1.3.1-r1)

The key here is <sys-libs/glibc-2.26.

You need to update that first.

Code:
emerge -1av sys-libs/glibc
should offer you >=sys-libs/glibc-2.26. If it does, let it run.

Well, as the blocker is saying, you need glibc-2.26 or newer for libnsl and rpcsvc-proto. According to the tree's log, 2.26-r7 was sabilized 11 days ago for x86 (amd64 was stable even longer).

So try updating glibc and make sure it updates to 2.26-r7 or newer (do make sure portage says the the version is at least 2.26, if not you need to find out why):
Code:
emerge -1av glibc

Didn't work:
Code:

So 2.26-r7 is the latest stable. 2.25-r11 is still in the repo and marked stable.

Lets ask emerge to try harder.

Code:
emerge -uUDav @world --with-bdeps=y --backtrack=50 --keep-going

glibc no longer supports USE=rpc but no special action should be required for the upgrade. Portage should be able to work it all out.
rpc became its own package.

You should check what those options do before you use them. You may want to swap the -U to -N but that may do useless rebuilds.

That got it going. Thanks!

I'm experimenting exactly the same problem, on my last monthly emerge.

From what I can see, in my case, the "block" came from this use flag:

Code:
net-fs/autofs -libtirpc

I've applied long ago, "Sun Jul 3 17:27:25 CEST 2016", to the package "net-fs/autofs" because automount was
core dumping, at that time, using, I guess, net-libs/libtirpc.

If I understood your comment, sys-libs/glibc-2.26-r7 doesn't contain "rpc" anymore and the
only possibiliry to install autofs is WITHOUT the "-libtirpc" USE flag.

Did I understand the problem?

peppev,

That sounds about right. You still need rpc form somewhere.

Thanks NeddySeagoon, but, if what I wrote is "about right", it seems to me "emerge" is
not able to handle the autofs ebuild nicely.

Shouldn't the autofs ebuld changed in some way to prevent the combination
of glibc-WITHOUTRPC AND USE=-libtirpc?

=net-fs/autofs-5.1.4 already prevents that:
Code:
RDEPEND="
 ...
    libtirpc? ( net-libs/libtirpc )
    !libtirpc? ( elibc_glibc? ( sys-libs/glibc[rpc(-)] ) )
"
If you set USE=-libtirpc, then the ebuild insists on a glibc with USE=rpc. Current stable glibc cannot be USE=rpc, so you cannot use current stable glibc with autofs[-libtirpc]. What do you think Portage should have done in this case?

I don't know NeddySeagoon, that the reason I asked. I hoped the ebuild
may have written in a way to make the error more evident in the emerge
install report.

If nothing can be done, if this is the best way emerge is able to handle such a situation, well,
I guess I have still a long way about learning how to read the errors emerge reports.

Thanks.
