Hey, thanks for this thread!
Yeah Im trying to make some sense into enlightenment project/packages in Gentoo. I had a talk with a gentoo-dev how this should be done; slotmoves, separating packages or what, and he suggested that last-riting e16 would be the best solution. I agreed, to fix few problems regarding enlightenment in gentoo.
I personally do use e16 in my very-old-laptop (that I havent booted in 2 years, BUT NEVERTHELESS!). Thats why I have a small interest of bringing it back once the mess is solved :P |

Yeah, the current arrangement is kind of a mess. The 0.17 slot dates back to when DR17 was stuck in development hell for 10 years, and the git versions in both slots are lower numbered than the normal versions - that can't be right.
Maybe having it (temporarily) disappear will increase the bus factor a bit, it seemed to work for compiz... |

^ I agree :)
It could be done overnight, just update every package to latest release and remove everything else. However, people with different architechtures and stable systems would be left unnoticed (there seem to be few users, not many...).
So the slowest part is re-keywording newer packages for different architechtures, and stabilizing them. I intend to stabilize the latest 0.21 release now, and keep updating 0.22 series until E23 is released. Then stabilize E22 (and deps) and drop E21. This takes time though because stabilization progress is slow... But in the end it should be very clear and easy to maintain. |

I note this is to be dropped. I have used it for years, and still do. I find it to be the simplest and most versatile window manager available. With the addition of an xfce4 panel it can be 'tailor made' to personal preferences. It seems I must drop gentoo now after many years of use, if I find I am unable to continue without it.
I am beginning to find gentoo's habit of dropping programs rather annoying, to the extent that I found myself installing xubuntu under virtualbox, so that I could continue to use old familiar programs no longer available.
For me, gentoo has been a way of personalising my system, it has allowed personal choice, but if the availability of programs is to be constantly changing then I must find another system. Perhaps arch is more stable? |

It will come back. They just want to purge out the old "broken" ebuilds and start over. |

Not sure if it comes back. Open bugs must be fixed at least. And if no dev is actually using it... |

Thanks for the heads up. I used e16 for years and after some research switched to openbox about three months ago. There was not too much re-learning to do. |

I appreciate the confusion between E16 and the later Enlightenment, which I find to be a totally different creature and one to be avoided by me. But a little masking solves that problem. I suspect the later Enlightenment only will be retained.
I have found E16 to be brilliant because of it's "configureability" and absence of "bloat". I don't want to sit and admire the wonderful graphics on my desktop, but want something that allows me to find, manage, control and use the working programs on my computer, and E16 has always served to do that.
I haven't found any bugs in many years of use, other than confusion with the non E16 version. |

There's another user in the bug who made e16 available in his public overlay,
https://github.com/mcclung/e16-overlay
overlays are a wonderful feature of Gentoo :)
As Ive said here and in the bug, I did have intentions of bringing it back, but there has been some reluctancy over on Gentoo's side even before asturm's reply, so it might not come avail to main tree anymore. But we can make the overlay work; edit Gentoo's Enlightenment wiki page to let people know where to find e16, add it to layman's list, update ebuilds to Gentoo's standards and be active reporting issues in the overlay page.
I too use e16 but Im not a dev :I |

Just saw this during an update:
Code: | !!! The following installed packages are masked:
- x11-wm/enlightenment-1.0.17::gentoo (masked by: package.mask)
/usr/portage/profiles/package.mask:
# Joonas Niilola <juippis@gmail.com> (18 May 2018)
# Unmaintained, bugs open without activity, makes users
# install ancient version of enlightenment by typing
# 'emerge enlightenment' due to obnoxious package slotting.
# Bug #656020. Removal in ~30 days

I'm not sure if is dead, but in portage tree is masked only version <=0.17
Code: | # eix x11-wm/enlightenment
* x11-wm/enlightenment
Available versions:
(0) [M]**0.16.9999 [M]1.0.17
(0.17) 0.20.5(0.17/0.20.5) ~0.20.6(0.17/0.20.6) ~0.21.7(0.17/0.21.7) ~0.21.11(0.17/0.21.11) ~0.22.3(0.17/0.22.3) |

There's already talk about this,
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1081316.html
https://bugs.gentoo.org/656020
but to summarize it: E16 will get removed for now to reset slotting for enlightenment-wm packages. There are still ebuilds for E20, E21 and E22, and they all should work. Enlightenment's latest releases for E21 and E22 are currently available.
https://www.enlightenment.org/
Theres a link to E16 overlay in the other thread but let it be known in here as well, that I do want to bring it back under a different name. |

Yes you tell all what i have to say
E17....300000 is a macintouched WM and totally different creature and one to be avoided by me
i use E16 since 1998 without any problems
so i don't understand why there should be a reason for musking the original one
my opinion is that the E17-30000 is a totally different creature and so they should be handled like a different WM _________________ Never give up

Yep, just found my favorite WM about to be flushed down the gurgler the monthly emerge --depclean ....
Code: |
>>> These are the packages that would be unmerged:
x11-wm/enlightenment
selected: 1.0.17
protected: none
omitted: 0.21.7
|
Damn, I run e16 on the simplest intel atoms to the gruntiest quadcore i7 with no probs at all.
I've used since 1999 and found it all over other wms then and now.
Its light, snappy and its more recent siblings are some thing quite different in flavour and ease of use.
So not wanting to see it go and not wanting to have to put up with any other wm...
I just added it back to the world file and so its safe for now.
Code: |
# emerge -va --noreplace =x11-wm/enlightenment-1.0.17
These are the packages that would be merged, in order:
Calculating dependencies... done!
Total: 0 packages, Size of downloads: 0 KiB
* x11-wm/enlightenment:0
Would you like to add these packages to your world favorites? [Yes/No]
>>> Recording x11-wm/enlightenment:0 in "world" favorites file...
|
Tested with emerge -va --depclean, and enlightenment is skipped right over!
Excellent!
Looking forward to an e16 overlay!! |

I tried openbox for a bit, and would use it in preference to other more complex window managers, but old habits die hard and I missed the familiar. So I have now installed the e16-overlay. Not having installed an overlay previously, there was quite a bit of learning involved, but things are now back to 'normal'. I suggest all who want to see e16 re-instated use the overlay. This might prove to the doubters that there is still a desire to see it reinstated. |

Am I right that Enlightment E16 is still being updated by developers ? I see version 1.0.19 for August 2018 on https://www.enlightenment.org/e16 |

Yes. No new features, but some bug and compatibility fixes. For example, 1.0.19 can be built with gcc-8 while previous release cant. |

So I don't see why should Gentoo drop it (except manpower argument), especially since it is notably different from E17 |

Enlightenment 17..30000 was in my opinion a Freeloaders perfidious hostile takeover
They created something very different , called it also Enlightenment17 to let the people think it's the new Version of Enlightenment E16 then keep in mind that both packages where slotted under the same NAME
And now these people say WE ARE ENLIGHTMENT and not the OLD one.
this is the perfidious hostile takeover.
Quote: |
Old Enlightenment-e16 is still maintained. It was removed from Gentoo's portage tree because it caused a lot of confusion and made later Enlightenment releases harder to handle due to wrongly slotted packages. You can install e16 from e16-overlay |
whooohhh what a wrong sentimental
The maintainers were unable in earlier times to make one Package called Enlightenment16 AND the other Enlightenment17 or what ever
These people kicked the ORIGINAL ENLIGHTENMENT out of the official portage tree
