PostPosted: Tue May 29, 2018 11:28 pm    Post subject: [solved] blank screen and freeze when starting xorg as user Reply with quote

My system was working ok, then after a recent update it started freezing when logging in. Lightdm appears with a login screen, I type in the user password then the screen goes blank and there is no response, it is frozen and ignores ctrl-alt-del or ctrl-alt-F1 commands, so i'm forced to do a hard reboot. I recently found out that closing the laptop lid, which triggers a suspend, and then opening it, then pressing a key, causes the screen to appear for a second, then it goes blank, and if I do the close/suspend and open again it then responds and I am in the logged in x session (mate). Sometimes it freezes however and the lid closing trick does not wake it up.

When it is frozen it does not appear to be suspended, the light on the power button is on, and the power led on the side of the laptop is on. When I suspend it those lights are off.

I've looked through the logs and can't find any meaningful errors, eg in /var/log/messages, dmesg, Xorg.0.log. It only happens with the user account, if I log in as root (eg running startx from the command line) it boots the x session normally, while doing the same for a user causes the freeze.

The set of packages that I had updated when this started happening are as follows:

Code:
VIDEO_CARDS="intel i965"

You might need to add i965 to make.conf.

I added i965 to make.conf and rebuilt the relevant packages, but it doesn't change anything.

There might be some clues in dmesg from the steps it goes through. First the lightdm login screen comes up, then the screen goes black and it freezes. Then I close the lid and it makes it suspend, I open the lid and it resumes for a few seconds and the desktop appears, then it goes black and freezes again. After that I close the lid again and it suspends, and after I open the lid it resumes and works ok and I can keep using it. I haven't worked out the exact cycle in the dmesg log and what is happening or what is different in each step.

Is your user a member of the video group? Did you try removing vesa and fb from your Xorg.conf file if you have one? As it seems to try and load it.

Yes the user is a member of the video group, and I don't use an xorg.conf

It looks like after some updates/rebuilds the problem has gone away, maybe one of the above suggestions helped, i don't know, but its not causing problems any more. Thanks
