19.9GB xorg-session.log file in /home/wrc.share/sddm ???

My emerge @world failed (on qtwebkit) and said I was out of disk space. My Gentoo partition is 51gb, so I was quite surprised, and checked all the usual suspects, and nothing was causing the problem.

Finally, I discoverd the culprit in /home/wrc/.local/share/sddm/, which for some reason had an "xorg-session.log" file that was an insane 19.9 GiB (21,317,043,696) in size!!!
It seems it is currentl in use, as it was accessed at the time of today's emergeing.

There's the normal /var/log/sddm of 2.1 MiB, and no current .xsession-errors in /home/wrc.

I couldn't even open up the "xorg-session.log file" to see what was going on, as it's to large.

Ah, thanks Ant P.- too late, I already deleted it to continue today's updates.

Sure would have liked to see what it was logging.

How did space exhaustion in /home break a system update? Don't you isolate /home to a separate filesystem exactly so users can't go breaking such things?

As for what happened, probably you had some program go rogue and start spamming error messages. We'd need the file's contents to work out which program is guilty. Please try to break your system again so we can investigate.

I've had all three Gentoo systems I have with everything each on one 50 GB partition for many years, except with a common shared distfiles directory linked on another partition.

In my early Gentoo years I did have separate /boot, /home, and /portage partitions. but when I started running multiple distros on the same 1-2 TB disk drive it became more trouble than it was worth.

I would agree with your hypothesis that some program was going rogue and begin spamming error messages, but it no longer seems to be the case on any of my Gentoo installations.

The /home/wrc/.local/share/sddm/xorg-session.log file is now only 20.2 KiB KiB, populated with stuff like this, but system is running normally, no problems. However, I am in the middle of a big kde 167 package update. I do wonder about the meaning and importance of the QXcbConnection: XCB (BadWindow) errors. :roll:

That depends on whether you want a cynic's normal or an optimist's normal. The cynic will tell you that yes, that looks typical for a modern system. The optimist will point out that most of those are error messages that should be fixed by their respective authors. The gtk/gdk messages are definitely a sign that someone somewhere did something wrong, but good luck getting the report to someone who can fix it.

I had the same issue with a 527GB file containing:
