It's outdated.
For example, https://packages.gentoo.org/packages/app-office/libreoffice
The last stable is 5.4.4.2, but portage reports 5.4.5.1
Many other packages - Internal Server error (500).
What's wrong? |

See Gentoo Infrastructure Status.

I really wish they would put up a redirect to that status page, or just a static page indicating that it is down and a link. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

They could. And presumably haven't for a reason. So in the meantime, "down for maintenance" pages are common practice. Or in this case, "down because no maintenance for you!" _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

You can use http://en.znurt.org/ instead. Or, you know, eix and equery on the commandline. _________________ "Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves." - Abraham Lincoln

Is there any place to donate specifically for new hardware for that server? |

No, but you could talk to #gentoo-infra on IRC to see what they need and then possibly use the existing non-specific donate link to contribute after coming to an understanding. I'm not sure it's a lack of hardware that's holding it up, though, as they're currently working on a new database back end cluster for the Forums and Bugs and there's hardware for that.

Sometimes I've been wondering what's the purpose of packages.gentoo.org when people can use Gentoo povided tools via command line.
Although sometimes someone might be on some PC that's not running Gentoo and need to query packages...
Such rare cases should be considered as bugs. ;) _________________ ..: Zucca :..

FYI, there are a lot of hardware upgrades in progress and/or planning right now as one of our main hosting / hardware donators, Gossamer Threads, has asked us to let them retire a whole slew of older Gentoo Infrastructure machines. They've offered some really nice modern machines in return, but the upshot is that the effort is larger than you would think.

| The equery tool won't tell you about packages that you don't have installed. Also, there is usually a link to the bug list. Some packages are described no more than the ebuild does, but others have useful comments about changes. |

Moved from Gentoo Forums Feedback to Gentoo Chat, because packages.gentoo.org is not forums.gentoo.org. |
