Hey all, I was wondering if it was possible to get emoji support in my terminal. When I run

urxvt -fn 'xft:DejaVu Sans Mono,xft:Twitter Color Emoji:size=19'

And try to paste in an emoji, I get the error

urxvt: unable to calculate font width for 'Twitter Color Emoji-19:slant=0:weight=100:minspace=True', ignoring.

I can see characters like ⌚ perfectly fine in my browser. Does anyone have any ideas?

If you adjust lineSpace (-lsp) it will probably work, but you might not like the side-effect of changing this value. I use Symbola to handle Unicode chars not covered by typical fonts, but only certain emoji work. I think it's because of how some of them are defined.

Here is a link to the font I'm using: https://github.com/eosrei/twemoji-color-font

I applied https://github.com/blueyed/PKGBUILD-rxvt-unicode-wide and now I just get blank spaces instead of the boxes.

When I apply the symbola font, I get boxes with question marks inside them... I've read other people suggesting symbola elsewhere, but it doesn't seem to work differently for me.

My .Xresources:

Code:

Xft.dpi:                        96
Xft.antialias:                  true
Xft.rgba:                       rgb
Xft.hinting:                    true
Xft.hintstyle:                  hintslight

urxvt*transparent:              true
urxvt*shading:                  30
URxvt.letterSpace:              1
URxvt.scrollBar:                false
URxvt.font:                     xft:DejaVu Sans Mono:size=9, xft:Symbola:size=9

Ugh... I was really hoping to stay with urxvt... Guess I'll try st. This post was kind of my last resort, as I've spent a lot of time googling to no avail. Thanks all for your help!

Yup. Used urxvt too, but decided to go with (heavyweight) xfce4-terminal, since I'm testing xfce4 for my workflow... although I might replace xfwm4 with i3wm...
