-using:
    Ubuntu 16.04.4 LTS x86_64
    sha512sum (GNU coreutils) 8.25
    Qt 4.8.7
    KDE Development Platform 4.14.16
    K3b 2.0.3

-downloaded:
    livedvd-amd64-multilib-20160704.iso
    livedvd-amd64-multilib-20160704.iso.DIGESTS
from a random mirror provided from https://www.gentoo.org/downloads/

-ran a command:
Code:
$ sha512sum -c '/home/donald/Downloads/Gentoo/livedvd-amd64-multilib-20160704.iso.DIGESTS' 2>&1 | grep OK
and have gotten
Code:
livedvd-amd64-multilib-20160704.iso: OK

-performed a manual check of the sum and it was correct
-SHA512 sum is: 88fa7f2f700fac8caae2691b7797f80f5c47813f4b63b75cdeca6b7dcc8223c24b1e1a9ae7b57e4d86109716c2c638f5b9998ed385bb9f2528ef34bf02c8b115

-burned the aforementioned ISO to 2 DVDs using K3b
-in both burnings writing speed was set to 4x
-in both burnings option was set to verify written data, and the data was verified

-computed a SHA512 sum of both DVDs separately with command
Code:
$ sha512sum /dev/sr0
"/dev/sr0" is the correct location
-both DVDs have the same SHA512 sum
-SHA512 sum is: 9cbc496f10f1fbad62d3fac0f54c50c60a6f72cdcabdaa1e3cf0d1fac0227854cc864a26e34bb219515980f989f6a895f7ff7aa6cf054e3e08e96f3156ae055d

Why the difference?
The same process with "ubuntu-18.04-desktop-amd64.iso" gives identical sums.

Probably (depending on ISO image size) a few bytes may be added to the end by burning software. Why this is so important? It is posted in Installing Gentoo subforum, hinting this is about installing Gentoo. Not a single bit from installation media will become part of your Gentoo, but feel free to use Ubuntu DVD to install Gentoo if the checksum issue troubles you.
