PostPosted: Thu Apr 26, 2018 8:53 pm    Post subject: disabling KDE wallet service popups Reply with quote

I have been using keepassxc for a while, and am quite happy with it.

When I mount an encrypted hard drive or start certain browsers in KDE, I get a KDE wallet service popup asking me to set up a wallet. As I prefer to do things the "UNIX" way - keeping things separate, I have no intention of using kwallet (for example, I have never used a browser's built in password manager, because that could increase the damage that vulnerabilities - and browser's have lots of vulnerabilities - could cause).

So I am wondering about a method of disabling these popups. Is there some way of doing that (perhaps short of removing kwallet, but I don't mind even doing that as long as removing it doesn't break other things)?

Maybe disable it in Systemsettings->Account Details->KDE Wallet.

I don't see any options there. "Account Details" has nothing but "Add, remove or edit system users" [sic].

Try System -> KWalletManager

Definitely not there, either. I did find an app (not installed) by that name, though.

Yes you should install this package, it isn't provided by any meta package

The content of "Disabling KWallet" section of wiki page works only if kwallet installed. The same with systemsettings.

I disabled kwallet popup windows by adding --password-store=basic parameter to command line of launching app. For google-chrome it looks like
Code:
/usr/bin/google-chrome-stable --password-store=basic

For opera:
Code:
opera-beta --password-store=basic

Just add this parameter to app cmd line in KMenuEditor

Already saw that. Already did that. Doesn't work (not to say it won't work after a reboot, but I can't test that right now).

I would rather have --password-store=none (does such an option exist?). Browsers are among the least secure apps on any system. I don't trust them with anything, and don't want them storing any sensitive information, period.

And how do I get rid of the popup windows when I plug in an encrypted hard drive or encrypted flash drive?

Seems it exists, it blocks kwallet popup as well as --password-store=basic

Do you use key file or password? I'm using key file and have no any popups when mounting encrypted partition

I use a (random) password (chosen from a 10^80 universe). Seems to me (unless I have the wrong impression) that a keyfile can eventually be brute forced.

Should be some way of disabling kwallet, though. What an annoyance!
