After configuring and compiling latest stable 4.9 kernel things started to work.

One little thing is still bugging me. If I have given some resolution in refind.conf and which isn't available, refind complains about it twice. Each error message needs manual intervention (a keypress) before the boot process can continue. Does anyone know if there's a way to tell rEFInd to disregard minor errors and just continue?

Zucca: I don't.
I did have the same issue, but since there was only one usable mode anyway (what the BIOS supports in EFI boot mode), it was not a problem.
It was pretty much "edit and forget."

The author is pretty approachable, so I'm sure he'd accept a bug-report, and would love a patch to effect the behaviour you're after.

I disabled the resolution setting. It works now. And actually isn't much of a problem on a server.

Yeah. I've booted the server several times now. Works like a charm and always recognizes the latest kernel. I don't know if it checks the version number or file creation date. Anyway, works for my use.

Thanks for everybody who posted.

The file date. You can make an older file the boot default by "touch"
