I'm hoping to run 2 monitors: My primary using nvidia proprietary drivers, and my secondary using intel drivers. I made an initial attempt, and the intel driver got loaded and then unloaded by X, and the screen attached to the intel device never started up. Further, X would lock up when I tried to launch chromium. Once I commented out the intel screen from my server config, all was good again.

Is what I'm trying to do possible, or will the nvidia driver not play nicely with others?

Conditional_Zenith,

nvidia-drivers does not play nicely with the open source drivers.
Typically, they need conflicting kernel settings.

However, the modesetting driver should mork both with your Intel chip and the nvidia-drivers.
The downside is that its not as fast as the Intel driver.

Make Xorg work with Intel only and the modesetting driver.
Make nvidia only work, with the nvidia driver.

Lastly put the pieces together.

The modesetting driver is free with Xorg, so if you feel lucky, just change the driver for the Intel chip.

-- edit --

Both those GPUs are capable of running two monitors, so why do you want to use both GPUs?

Thanks for the info, I'll have to look into the modesetting driver. I'm fine with the intel chip not operating at it's most efficient, but I need the nvidia one to be working as well as an nvidia card can in linux.

The reason I want both is that my main monitor is capable of 144Hz, my secondary is only capable of 60Hz. I had trouble getting my main to work at 144Hz when I ran both off my nvidia card. Possibly I did not try hard enough. Running both off the integrated intel chip is a non starter as I'm a gamer (and my quick research says that the intel chip can only output at 60Hz anyway).

Conditional_Zenith,

The binary part of nvidia-drivers is the same binary code that runs on windows.
Its only the 'shim' code that makes it work with Linux.

There shouldn't be any problems with differing vertical refresh rates.

It seems I had no problem getting them both to work off my nvidia card at different refresh rates when I tried again. Thanks for your help.
