|

Hi all.
I recently build a new pc and I want to install gentoo. I readed about this and I think that I need to install /home and swap in the hdd. Should I install all in the ssd except /home and swap?
Thanks for all. |

I would install Gentoo completely at the SSD and would use the HDD just for dedicated (archive) file systems which then should either be mounted onto subdirs under /home or simply at /mnt |

I use a 120GB SSD and 1TB HDD for my desktop. Root on SSD with home, boot and swap. General media and storage goes on the 1TB HDD somewhere under /mnt.
I've tried moving things around but found that having /home on the ssd is beneficial...with /home on rotating rust it was annoying waiting and listening to the hdd spin into action to read a config file in /home.
Perhaps best to just install Gentoo on the SSD, once you are up and running you can try moving it around. |

Ok, I will do that.
I readed that in the SSD is better to use tmpfs to prevent ssd damage. Should I do this or is better to do a normal installation? |

ab0nim0,
/tmp will be in tmpfs anyway.
If you have the RAM, 4G is enough for most things, then its good to put portages build space in tmpfs too.
If you are short of RAM, you can have per package settings to build on the SSD.
Either way, you are unlikely to wear the drive out before it becomes obsolete. _________________ Regards,

tmpfs /tmp tmpfs size=9G,noatime
| There's nothing faster than tmpfs |
