Am I the only one without it or does chrome not support it for linux? I read somewhere that not even mozilla has support for it on linux. Just having some trouble watching 4k youtube.

Here another one :D . I have some problem with accel enabled but I think is a nvidia-driver problem (not tested).

I know chrome shows I have some hardware acceleration with nvidia-drivers, but not full. I do recall chrome had a firm stance and that hardware acceleration for linux is NOT supported, nor planned to ever be. There is reports it does work if you use chromium though. This is tested with latest package versions in portage tree (I am running unstable branch), and checked on google-chrome; I haven't checked on chromium or beta branch of google-chrome

Considering the recent driver support improvements in mesa, its likely they will enable support soon after drivers fully support the hardware.

In Chromium (and qtwebengine) hardware acceleration IMHO is still WIP:

and

From my understanding, the profiles between the 2 should be compatible with each other. As chromium is just the open source/testing version of google chrome. So minus a few proprietary plugins in google-chrome, they are relatively the same thing (of course minus experimental changes and stuff).

I quit trying to emerge chromium after about 5 hours. Can I just use some RPM chromium binary package? Since gentoo doesn't provide chromium bin packages.

Notice chromium has https://chromium-review.googlesource.com/c/chromium/src/+/532294 video acceleration support unlike google chrome, which I already use.

There's also some overlays that have chromium-bin

Thats nice but look at the severely outdated package

Code:
* www-client/chromium-bin [1]
     Available versions:  ~*53.0.2785.143.1145 ~*62.0.3202.62.1308
     Homepage:            http://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial/chromium-browser
     Description:         Chromium Binary from Ubuntu for ARM (e.g. Raspberry Pi)
