Hi.

I use `systemd` and can’t start SDDM—after `systemctl start sddm` I get black screen with blinking text cursor in the upper left corner. LightDM starts just fine and lets me log-in to Plasma and X.org logs look clean to me.

What can I do to debug this?

I'm not sure in systemd init system, but there is log file /var/log/sddm.log?

With journalctl you see anything related?
sddm is in video group?

SDDM is in video group.

In `journalctl` I see loads and loads of:
Code:
Apr 04 09:05:06 ripper sddm[647]: QProcess: Destroyed while process ("/usr/libexec/sddm-helper") is still running.
Apr 04 09:05:06 ripper sddm[647]: /usr/bin/xauth: (stdin):1:  bad "remove" command line
Apr 04 09:05:06 ripper sddm[647]: /usr/bin/xauth: (stdin):2:  bad "add" command line

Searching for that seems to indicate that this is benign—it shows only when people have other configuration problems, typically with X.org, plus the occasional ‘Saw the same issue several times on my Gentoo box, but then it suddenly/magically worked again.’. But I don’t even get to that point—it turns out it doesn’t even get to starting X.org (I have no logs this time; it turns out I was mistaken and looked at the logs from ‘good’ sessions, i.e. started with LightDM).

EDIT: I’ve cleaned my X.org config, no luck.

You have a configuration file /etc/sddm.conf?

I did. It was exactly the same as the one generated by `sddm --example-config`.

And then I tried removing it and now it works. Any idea what happened? Because that looks like something that should be reported as a bug.

I don't know, but I looked in the sddm wiki page history and I see that section with command to generate sddm.conf is removed

I don't have systemD but occasionally had a few hiccups with sddm recently after the Qt5.9 update.
I found that sddm also has some cached files, including QML stuff. Maybe it helps to delete this and try to start then?
check
/var/lib/sddm/.cache/
maybe.

Thank you, I’ll keep that in mind in case the problem would reappear.
