I 'm trying to install gentoo on an old P4. Is it possible to use s2ram on this machine?

Code:
s2ram
Machine is unknown.
This machine can be identified by:
    sys_vendor   = " "
    sys_product  = " "
    sys_version  = " "
    bios_version = "F4"

-march=nocona --param l1-cache-line-size=64 --param l1-cache-size=16 --param l2-cache-size=2048

dmesg | wgetpaste

suspend to RAM?

This usually depends on your ACPI firmware whether it will be successful or not.

Did you try it? That's about all we can do at this point... Make sure power saving is enabled in the firmware and enable "S3" sleep.

As eccerr0r says, S3 needs substantial help from your firmware. Historically, firmware authors have been infamous for the poor quality of their code in a variety of areas, including power management. The s2ram people decided it would be less work for them to maintain a whitelist of machines where S3 works than to maintain a blacklist of machines where it is broken. Presumably, they came to this decision after fielding too many reports of broken machines.

Your best bet is to save all your work, make the system as ready as possible for a hard hang, then force the S3 transition. If it fails, at least you were prepared. If it works, you can keep using it.
