PostPosted: Wed Mar 21, 2018 3:20 pm    Post subject: Setting up OpenGL 2 or GLES 2 on i915 Reply with quote

Editing this thread. I traced the problem mentioned formerly (see below) to be DRI / OpenGL related : Atleast with systemsettings, no crash if i use software rendering (moderate performance), or if i enable "acceleration" and only disable DRI (very poor performance)

As i still want to try to get acceleration to work properly, i am still experimenting...

One thing i want to test is : This chipset - G31m (GMA3100) used to support OpenGL 2.x under older versions of mesa. There is a setting, which is supposed to enable the same options under new mesa :

/etc/drirc
Code:
<driconf>
...
    <device driver="i915">
        <application name="Default">
            <option name="stub_occlusion_query" value="true" />
            <option name="fragment_shader" value="true" />
        </application>
    </device>
...
</driconf>

This setup is from Arch wiki. In a recent install of Arch on another PC with same chipset/IGP, it worked for me and i got KDE to use OpenGL 2

Under Gentoo on this PC, after making this config glxinfo still shows OpenGL 1.4

So : What else i have to set to enable OpenGL 2 or GLES 2 under Gentoo ?

The gallium driver should be 2.1 already, at least I'm not aware that they downgraded that one to 1.4. Only the classic driver was downgraded (because the hardware doesn't actually support 2.1, some of it is emulated in software, causing certain applications to crawl to a halt, in particular Chromium).

Anyway, explicit version overrides will work for sure:
Code:
export MESA_GL_VERSION_OVERRIDE=2.1 MESA_GLSL_VERSION_OVERRIDE=120
