Hello Everyone,

I'm running 32 bit Gentoo without SystemD under VMWare Player. Until about 3-4 months ago everything related to startx and xdm/sddm worked.

Since some sort of upgrade/patch (I sync at least weekly and emerge -uDNav system and world ) now all startx gives me is a blank screen with a cursor in the middle.

I've tried emerge -e world a couple of times (also as part of the gcc change). I've blown it all away and started over with fresh stage3. I've uninstalled all the XF-* and XORG-* packages and reinstalled them...still no go.

Right now I'm on a fresh install that only is base + the XORG mega package and xterm (so startx has something to launch) and still no-go.

The eselect profile is 17 Desktop

Which just mean xorg is has done the job, so working

Which then mean you have fail there :)

The termination occurs when I hit ^C in the ssh session that I executed startx from. Otherwise it just sits there with a blank screen and cursor.

<edit>
And yes, I made sure that DISPLAY wasn't set in the ssh session. I'm doing startx from the ssh so I can easily get back to it rather than ctrl-alt-f1.

It doesn't change the result, your xorg is not stuck, its changelog is filled with some warning and errors but just show it is doing the work, finding the card, the screen, the mouse and device, everything, even closing normally.
So if you are forcing it to stop, and it just stop because you force it, it doesn't change it was doing the job, so it is working.

My conclusion is then it is doing the job, but not a job you like, and your liking seems it should run "something" (actually that something you expect is "xterm") but it is not doing it ; hence you fail at feeding it with "something useful".

What is the content of your .xinitrc?

I've never needed an .xinitrc. Here's what startx is reporting in the shell:

Code:
xauth:  file /root/.serverauth.4316 does not exist

X.Org X Server 1.19.5
Release Date: 2017-10-12
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0
Build Operating System: Linux 4.9.76-gentoo-r1 i686 Gentoo
Current Operating System: Linux oldrobbie 4.9.76-gentoo-r1 #1 SMP Tue Mar 20 00:                                                        53:10 PDT 2018 i686
Kernel command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/kernel-genkernel-x86-4.9.76-gentoo-r1 root=UUID                                                        =64d41d5a-087f-4b4b-baed-5ea63fcb5df3 ro
Build Date: 19 March 2018  06:00:51PM

Current version of pixman: 0.34.0
        Before reporting problems, check http://wiki.x.org
        to make sure that you have the latest version.
Markers: (--) probed, (**) from config file, (==) default setting,
        (++) from command line, (!!) notice, (II) informational,
        (WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.
(==) Log file: "/var/log/Xorg.0.log", Time: Tue Mar 20 20:39:07 2018
(==) Using config directory: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d"
(==) Using system config directory "/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d"
VMware: No 3D enabled (0, Success).
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc: line 58: twm: command not found
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc: line 59: xclock: command not found

so it's finding xterm...

And if I start an xserver on the host box and set DISPLAY, I'm able to launch xterm from the command line...so all the pieces are there, they just don't seem to all work at the same time.

When I do a ^C, the main player window returns back to VT1 and displays the text logon prompt again. So it appears that something isn't quite right with XF86-video-vmware...
