Why is it that when I RDP to a Windows machine (or VNC to a Linux machine) I see crisp clear and super readable fonts but on the local screen they're all washed out and ugly?
And with they're I mean the local output or local fonts as in not the remote fonts. |

The Windows RDP server disables visual effects including antialiasing. Not sure about VNC but that might just be JPEG artifacting. |

I read this as a report that his locally installed fonts are ugly, but that when he views pictures of other people's fonts, those pictures look good. If so, then the explanation is that the other computers probably have better fonts installed and the fix is that he should install better fonts locally. |

To that point, see Getting Beautiful Fonts in Gentoo. Makes a very noticeable difference for me. This is one of the oldest posts on the Forums that I still find relevant and useful: almost 10 years old as of this writing.
