I'm having trouble getting Windows 7working with grub 2. I originally had Gentoo on a removable hard drive and Windows 7 on another and just swapped them out when it suited. I did this mostly because I didn't want Windows to nuke linux and grub but now I want them to be selectable through grub2.
My system is set up as follows, Gentoo on sda and Windows 7 on sde and a unused old Windows 10 partition on sdb. It seems grub2 seems to find them both

and when I update grub they both seem to setup ok. Ignore the Windows 10 partition, it's redundant and going to be reformatted.

I'm assuming the WARNING isn't anything to worry about.
When I try to start Windows 7 I get an error, something about a missing bootmgr but if I boot into Windows 7 directly from BIOS using F8 it works perfectly. Annoyingly the redundant Windows 10 partion boots correctly, I've looked at this guide here https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/GRUB2/Chainloading and saw the bit at the end marked important about bootmgr but don't quite understand how to fix it. Do I need to boot of my Windows 7 cd and fix it and is that likely to then murder my grub setup? Surely if this was the issue, Windows 7 wouldn't boot through the F8 method?
I've also tried editing /etc/grub.d/40_custom but get the same error.
I'm using an old motherboard pre-UFEI and grub-2.02 if that helps. |
