|
|
I have an HP Probook 6550b. I recently reinstalled Gentoo in a dual-boot with Win7. I noticed that booting into Windows after installing it, before installing laptop-specific drivers, sound works. I hear the Windows startup fanfare. Once I install drivers for this laptop, that all goes away and sound stops working through the speakers. Sound through speakers never worked on this laptop with Gentoo.
But I know the hardware works. What is going on and how can I get the laptop speakers working again in Gentoo? All the usual stuff has been done. ALSA works. The headphone out works. But even though I know the speakers work, no sound gets through to them. _________________ decibel Linux: https://decibellinux.org

Did you check whether it's not muted? You can do
Quote: | alsamixer -c <card_number>
| e.g.
and check wheter speaker doesn't have "MM", you can unmute with M key.

many laptop need specific tweak to match their input/ouput to the correct one, a kind of like the codecs bit 3 is set for speakers (as it's default for that codec) and the laptop maker is using bit 3 for a recording entry, and alsamixer mistake who is who....
for them, you need a tweak that reorder the things properly, did you check alsa documentation (the one in kernel) to see list of laptop and tweak need for the card, and set tweak for that laptop ?
(i love to say tweak!)
You have also the hdmi is default sound card trouble: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/ALSA#Laptops_with_HDMI_audio_output
It does the same (the soundcard speakers are not use per default).
That's two things i would check |

Try enabling most of the HDA audio codecs. |
