sddm issues [solved]

Hi,

I am currently unable to use sddm as login manager. I have sddm 0.17.0-r1 (pam systemd -consolekit -elogind -test)
smmd-kcm 5.11.5, xorg-server-1.19.5 (systemd -wayland and many other flags), nvidia-drivers 387.22
When the system starts, I can see sddm starting. However, once it gets to the line [OK] Reached target Graphical Interface, it stops.
The login/greeter screen never appears. I can switch to a tty and login to a shell. There are no errors showing in sddm.log nor in Xorg.0.log

Any thoughts as to a possible solution. My temporary solution of using lightdm has also stopped working (see separate thread)

Does X work generally? Can you put your appropriate wm/de in ~/.xinitrc, run startx and have it start correctly?

If X doesn't work generally -- I notice you mention using nvidia-drivers. Is it possible you may have updated/changed your kernel since the last time you installed nvidia-drivers? They do not compile against your kernel each time you install a new one, so you'll have to manually re-install nvidia-drivers each time you update your kernel.

X is generally working. I can use lightdm for one user and load a plasma desktop.
Its sddm that seems to fail since the plasma 5.11.5 update.

Removing the cache had no effect.
Based on comments in other areas, I have downgraded the version of sddm to 0.15 and this has solved the problem, so it seems to be an issue with sddm 0.17 and some other component of the system (maybe xorg or nvidia-drivers or plasma)

sddm is independent of Plasma.

FWIW, a Radeon HD 7750/8740 / R7 250E, mesa-18.0.0_rc4, and sddm-0.15.0:0 have been working good on two Gentoo systems for me. Same mesa and sddm versions also works fine on my other Gentoo system with with an older Radeon HD 6570.

Exactly the same problem here, I've been stuck on sddm-0.15.0 for ages.
My package.mask where I kept track of all the non-working versions is becoming comical:

same here, 0.15.0 works fine, all above - sddm starts, but doing nothing, not starting X

and the only logs i found is
journalctl -b --unit=sddm.service

I have the same problem.

Downgrading to 0.15 fixed it as well.
But do we really consider that as a valid solution?

Where can I find logs that reveal why 0.17 and 0.18 fail?
