Blank screen with HD7870

I can't get my Radeon HD 7870 XT to work properly.

lspci:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Tahiti LE [Radeon HD 7870 XT]

With VIDEO_CARDS="amdgpu radeonsi radeon" I get a blank unresponsive screen after startx. I can't switch consoles, but I can login with SSH, kill X, but the screen will stay blank, I can only reboot. There are no obvious errors in the logfile. I have support for amdgpu and the firmware compiled into the kernel.

When I have only VIDEO_CARDS="amdgpu" it works, but I have no acceleration und it complains about missing /usr/lib64/dri/radeonsi_dri.so.
It also works without acceleration with only VIDEO_CARDS="radeon" and radeon in kernel.
With radeon and radeonsi I also get a blank screen.

The livecd seems to work quite well, what are they doing?

Update: I noticed, with only VIDEO_CARDS="radeon" it works quite well, I don't know if 3D is working.

Try setting VIDEO_CARDS="radeon radeonsi"

As far as I know, radeon OR amdgpu is the 2D driver while radeonsi is the 3D counterpart. Man! AMD drivers are a pain to use as of late.

I have a R7 250 (Southern Islands GCN 1.0) card and xorg (with 3D acceleration) works fine with the configuration below. However, I randomly experience a blank unresponsive screen.

I think, only VIDEO_CARDS="radeon" is ok, glxgears works. Have not tried any games, yet.
I did not think, that such an old card gets that complicated.

I even could not get the binary drivers from AMD to run on their supported distros like Ubuntu, SLES, RHEL or Cent OS.
Their support told me, it might not be supported anymore.
