PostPosted: Tue Feb 06, 2018 12:55 am    Post subject: [solved] X broken - nvidia and 4.14.15 kernel Reply with quote

Greetings. After a recent update X has stopped working.

I have two Gentoo file systems on this computer. One always lagging a bit behind the others for reasons exactly like this.

G0 is the working file system. G1 is the one with the broken X.

Both have xorg-server 1.19.6
G1 had nvidia-drivers-390.25
G0 with nvidia-drivers-390.12

First thing I did was downgrade G1 to nvidia-drivers-390.12 as that seems an obvious thing to test. That did not fix it. I did reboot the system after downgrading nvidia-drivers.

Here are the Xorg.0.log files.

Thanks for assistance. If any other information is helpful let me know.

There's no sign of the kernel module being loaded. Did you build it for the currently running kernel? Can you modprobe nvidia? Forgot modules autoload in kernel?

when you rebuild/install nvidia-drivers, the script look at /usr/src/linux to find what kernel it should install modules for, so even running a 4.1 kernel or whatever as long as /usr/src/linux remains /usr/src/linux-4.0 it will install the module for the 4.0 kernel in its /usr/lib/modules-4.0

please make sure your kernel symlink point to the right kernel (4.14.15 from your dmesg).

Thanks for the responses.

/usr/src/linux is pointing to 4.14.15. Good question. That's the sort of thing I'd screw up.

Here is what I did learn.

modprobe -v nvidia

gives me this

Code:

insmod /lib/modules/4.14.15-gentoo/video/nvidia.ko NVreg_DeviceFileMode=432 NVreg_DeviceFileUID=0 NVreg_DeviceFileGID=27 NVreg_ModifyDeviceFiles=1
Modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'nvidia': Exec format error

From looking around on the forum this "Exec format error" indicates that I've got some conflict in the building of some packages.

I think, from looking at dates on emerge logs, this coincides with me upgrading gcc-7.2 to gcc-7.3.

I re-emerged both nvidia-drivers and xorg-server.

Is there a way to determine which package(s) I need to rebuild? Or should I just do an "emerge -e xorg-server nvidia-drivers"? I that too drastic or the best option?

Thank you all.

It's just the nvidia module, so only nvidia-drivers.

What you should do before that is file /lib/modules/4.14.15-gentoo/video/nvidia.ko
Look what file says about it:
- 32bits may not run if kernel lack proper 32bits support
- 32bits libs may exist in /lib if you had "badly" switch to 17.1 profile (it's not bad to switch to it, but people should be prepare for that, and it should be done right)

So determine your sickness and we will help you :)

Hello;

Code:

 root # file /mnt/gentoo-1/lib/modules/4.14.15-gentoo/video/nvidia.ko
/mnt/gentoo-1/lib/modules/4.14.15-gentoo/video/nvidia.ko: ELF 64-bit LSB relocatable, x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), BuildID[sha1]=58241059b4f66155c9e667c7c5caa7354eee65bc, not stripped

The "/mnt/gentoo-1" stuff is because I am booted into the working Gentoo file system. The broken X file system is mounted on /mnt/gentoo-1.

I did update to profile 17.0. Did the emerge -e @world after doing so.

I have not updated to 17.1.

I can't claim to completely understand that. It has something to do with the retpoline option?

After a bit of searching my understanding is that this is a kernel option which is there because of the recent Spectre security problem.

Do I need to turn this off in the kernel? Or is it a matter of configuring something different?

In case you're still fiddling with that, it was a bug with kernel 4.14.15.

Strange I didn't get any notifications for this thread...

Sure enough. I updated to 15.3 and everything seems to be working now.

Since this was all working with the 14.15 kernel on the other file system such a think never occurred to me.

Live an learn. Thanks to everyone for the assistance.
