|
|
Hello, I asked here about setting up a Lenovo W520 laptop, with Optimus graphics and a docking station, to drive two external displays as well as the built-in. As can be seen from that earlier thread, I ended-up with an xorg.conf which is frequently recommended in the the Gentoo forums for running the dual graphics card setup. The setup has been working perfectly for six months.
I now want to push it to three external displays + the built-in.
The docking station has two DVI-D ports (which I am using), two DisplayPorts (which I read somewhere should not be used at the same time as the DVI-D) and one VGA.
When I plugged-in the third external display to the VGA port, the extra display was not used. The system does see it but won't drive it. Here is the output of xrandr before and after the extra VGA screen was plugged-in: Code: | Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 3840 x 2160, maximum 16384 x 16384 | Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 7144 x 1088, maximum 16384 x 16384

If I click the enable check-box and Apply, the box is unchecked and VGA-0 remains dimmed, as though the tool has decided for itself not to enable the display, or has been told that it cannot enable.
The Xorg.0.log looks like X has see the extra VGA (CRT-0?) but I don't know how to incorporate it into Xorg.conf.
I've run eselect opengl nvidia once and at each X session I run Code: | xrandr --setprovideroutputsource modesetting NVIDIA-0
xrandr --auto | According to this, it should be possible.
Any help in making the system recognise the extra monitor would be obliging. _________________ Michael Mounteney

Please add
Code: | Option "ModeDebug" "true" |
to the nvidia device section of your xorg.conf, reboot and paste a new Xorg.0.log
Try disabling the kscreen2 service of KDE and see if you can mange your monitors with nvidia-settings. |

I disabled kscreen2 and now nvidia-settings sees the extra VGA. When I try to enable it however, on clicking Apply in nvidia-settings, the message appears: Code: | The current layout has some inconsistencies:
• MetaMode 1 of Screen 0 has more than 2 active display devices. | Eventually I could save the layout generated by nvidia-settings, despite the warnings that it was inconsistent, but it was invalid and X wouldn't start with it. I had to kill my login manager and replace xorg.conf.
That metamode message implies that there is a hard limit on the number of devices that the NVidia adaptor will manage, and no amount of configuration will fix it. _________________ Michael Mounteney |

Yes, should have looked at that earlier, your gpu is a GF108GL means Fermi architecture, those only supported two displays connected directly to it. Only Kepler and up had more heads. So, sorry, end of mission;) |

...but looking at the xrandr output, it looks like the W520 has a VGA port that is connected to the intel card, that could work. Does it have a connector on the laptop? |

I did play around with a monitor plugged into the laptop's own VGA port, but no go. It's not a particularly attractive solution to me anyway.
