DVD sound on xine

Hi

I'm having a little problem with sound when playing DVDs with xine.

What works:

- I can play the separate chapters on the DVDs with mplayer (e.g. "mplayer dvd://2") (sound works here)
- I can play .mp4 files with Xine (sound and image work perfectly) so Xine can access my headphones when it wants to.
- alsaplayer will play sounds ("alsaplayer ricochet.wav" is sufficient)

What does not work:

- When I attempt to play a DVD over Xine, I get no sound (I'm using the alsa driver)
- DVD menus do not work in mplayer (some research suggests they are not supported)

I've googled and done much fiddling around with various sound options in xine, to no avail. Any recommendations? Are there any commands you'd like to see the output of in order to properly troubleshoot the issue?

This looks like a missing plugin. When you are dealing with audio or video it is always more complicated than if it works or not, you have different codecs for encoding and decoding streams. From your post this sounds like it could have been installed without support for the dvd audio, possibly. Can you provide emerge --info and emerge -pv xine (for package Xine)?\

EDIT: And by the way, check to see if your user is in the video and audio groups. As they most likely have to be, and the output suggests maybe some issues with the permission levels of the user for accessing:

Yep, found it! The fault was the lack of the a52 flag on xine-lib.
