I'm building an HP Proliant MicroServer with Gentoo under gentoo-sources-4.14.11 and having problems getting the Radeon driver to work - it's going to be a RAID media server, I just need a basic desktop to work and no need for proprietary graphics drivers.

"lspci" shows the built-in graphics card as:

Code:
01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] RS880M   [Mobility Radeon HD 4225/4250]

As per the Radeon Gentoo Wiki page, the settings are as follows:

Code:
R600   R600, RV610, RV630, RV620, RV635, RV670, RS780, RS880   HD2400-HD4290    3.3    2.0   radeon r600

In my "make.conf":

Code:
VIDEO_CARDS="radeon r600"

In my kernel configuration (I build my own kernels and have been doing so on Gentoo since 2003), I have the following settings for firmware:

Code:
CONFIG_EXTRA_FIRMWARE="radeon/R600_rlc.bin radeon/RS780_uvd.bin"
CONFIG_EXTRA_FIRMWARE_DIR="/lib/firmware"

When I boot the system in this mode, I get a normal text console for the first part of the boot, then when it would normally switch to a framebuffer screen, the console goes black. Xorg does not start either but the system is up because I can SSH into it absolutely fine.

dmesg | grep radeon shows the following which indicates that RS780_me.bin also needs to be in the CONFIG_EXTRA_FIRMWARE line above (and therefore contradicting what is on the page):

Code:
[    1.207545] [drm] radeon kernel modesetting enabled.
[    1.209249] radeon 0000:01:05.0: VRAM: 128M 0x00000000C0000000 - 0x00000000C7FFFFFF (128M used)
[    1.209323] radeon 0000:01:05.0: GTT: 512M 0x00000000A0000000 - 0x00000000BFFFFFFF
[    1.209867] [drm] radeon: 128M of VRAM memory ready
[    1.209920] [drm] radeon: 512M of GTT memory ready.
[    1.210094] radeon 0000:01:05.0: Direct firmware load for radeon/RS780_me.bin failed with error -2
[    1.210168] r600_cp: Failed to load firmware "radeon/RS780_me.bin"
[    1.210280] radeon 0000:01:05.0: Fatal error during GPU init
[    1.210910] [drm] radeon: finishing device.
[    1.218368] [drm] radeon: ttm finalized
[    1.218837] radeon: probe of 0000:01:05.0 failed with error -2

I change the kernel configuration to be as follows:

Code:
CONFIG_EXTRA_FIRMWARE="radeon/R600_rlc.bin radeon/RS780_uvd.bin radeon/RS780_me.bin"
CONFIG_EXTRA_FIRMWARE_DIR="/lib/firmware"

I get a text console on booting the changed kernel and just after the network services start, the screen goes blank with a flashing cursor. Xorg does not start.

dmesg | grep radeon shows the following:

Code:
[    1.207864] [drm] radeon kernel modesetting enabled.
[    1.209430] radeon 0000:01:05.0: VRAM: 128M 0x00000000C0000000 - 0x00000000C7FFFFFF (128M used)
[    1.209504] radeon 0000:01:05.0: GTT: 512M 0x00000000A0000000 - 0x00000000BFFFFFFF
[    1.210091] [drm] radeon: 128M of VRAM memory ready
[    1.210145] [drm] radeon: 512M of GTT memory ready.
[    1.210281] radeon 0000:01:05.0: Direct firmware load for radeon/RS780_pfp.bin failed with error -2
[    1.210354] r600_cp: Failed to load firmware "radeon/RS780_pfp.bin"
[    1.210465] radeon 0000:01:05.0: Fatal error during GPU init
[    1.210519] [drm] radeon: finishing device.
[    1.218453] [drm] radeon: ttm finalized
[    1.218954] radeon: probe of 0000:01:05.0 failed with error -2

Xorg0.log shows the following:

I change the kernel configuration to be as follows:

Code:
CONFIG_EXTRA_FIRMWARE="radeon/R600_rlc.bin radeon/RS780_uvd.bin radeon/RS780_me.bin radeon/RS780_pfp.bin"
CONFIG_EXTRA_FIRMWARE_DIR="/lib/firmware"

This time when I reboot, I get the message that the kernel is loading, then the screen goes entirely black with no text output until the Xorg login screen (LightDM).

dmesg | grep radeon shows:

Code:

I can log in normally and Xorg is in the correct screen mode. However, as soon as I try to switch to a console (<CTRL F1> etc.), the whole GUI locks up including the clock. The system is still accessible via SSH, I can of course restart xdm - and cause it to crash again.

Xorg0.log shows the following:

When I cause the display crash, this last single line appears in Xorg.0.log:

Code:
[   485.991] (II) AIGLX: Suspending AIGLX clients for VT switch

Can anyone offer any suggestions as to what to try next? I am stuck.

fredbear5150,

What console driver are you using?
The right answer is radeonfb. dmesg will show it.

Please pastebin all of dmesg and your kernel .config file.
Neither will fit in a post.

dmesg is here:

https://pastebin.com/4qtBkvHr

.config is here:

https://pastebin.com/NLzurLKM

I don't think I've ever used radeonfb and I have around 4 PCs running variations of ATI cards that all appear to boot up fine with the following lines:

Code:
CONFIG_DRM_RADEON=y
# CONFIG_DRM_RADEON_USERPTR is not set
# CONFIG_FB_RADEON is not set

I thought that the kernel Radeon FB driver conflicted with the DRM driver?

I have set the kernel config as follows and recompiled:

CONFIG_DRM_RADEON=y
# CONFIG_DRM_RADEON_USERPTR is not set
CONFIG_FB_RADEON=y
CONFIG_FB_RADEON_I2C=y
CONFIG_FB_RADEON_BACKLIGHT=y
# CONFIG_FB_RADEON_DEBUG is not set

It makes no difference. Black screen during boot up until LightDM login prompt, I can log in fine but crash the GUI with <CTRL F1>.

fredbear5150,

All the drm drivers give you a free framebuffer console.
You are not using it. You have the old
Code:
[    0.000000] Console: colour VGA+ 80x25
text only console.

Code:
# CONFIG_FB_RADEON is not set
is correct. All the CONFIG_FB_<HARDWARE> must be off. Those options are useful on hardware from the last millennium.

Are you intending to use a graphical boot?
Code:
CONFIG_FB_CON_DECOR=y
suggest that you might be but dmesg suggests that you don't have a graphical console to do it on.
Code:
# CONFIG_LOGO is not set
would give you one tux icon per logical CPU core at boot.

If you are intending a graphical boot, something in the initrd that delivers it is missing.
If not, change those two options over.

Code:
# CONFIG_DRM_FBDEV_EMULATION is not set
You probably need that.
Code:
  ┌───────── Enable legacy fbdev support for your modesetting driver ─────────┐
  │ CONFIG_DRM_FBDEV_EMULATION:                                               │
  │                                                                           │
  │ Choose this option if you have a need for the legacy fbdev                │
  │ support. Note that this support also provides the linux console           │
  │ support on top of your modesetting driver.                                │
  │                                                                           │
  │ If in doubt, say "Y".

This should give you the radeonfb support.

Thanks, that fixed it!

I should have seen that myself, especially as CONFIG_DRM_FBDEV_EMULATION is set on my other PCs with ATI (and NVIDIA) cards - I'll learn to do a comparative "diff" next time. :oops:

And, no, I don't use any boot up logos so I turned off console decoration support.

One final point that is extremely minor but I've never understood why it happens (and it happens on multiple Gentoo PCs of mine) - when you shutdown a Gentoo PC with a framebuffer console, why are many of the lines skewed on the screen as it reports shutting down each daemon? Is that something that happens to everyone and is just a framebuffer glitch?

It's very minor, has no service affect but never understood why it does it.

fredbear5150,

Can you post an image please?

I have a mix of Intel, Radeon and nouveau and I've never seen it.

It's something to do with Xorg setting the console to raw mode and not restoring it, each \n gets interpreted as a literal line feed instead of a unix one until you run `reset` or `stty sane`.

Is there a workaround?
