Dear All,
Many thanks for moving me over to the games section of the forum.
I installed games-fps/doom3.
Looking at the output toward the end of the compilation there seems to be a funny command: gpasswd -a <USER> games
that you run and then logout and back in again e.g. in kde as I am running here and then run the game.
Code: | >> Installing (2 of 2) games-fps/doom3-1.3.1304-r1::gentoo

It also seems to be the case that I ought to run
Code: | emerge games-fps/doom3-data |
Cheers
MF
PS there is a problem here - I don't have the CD's with the necessary data on them.
I have tried various solutions to this but they don't work.....
I think I will try running steam OS instead and see if I can get it to run there.....

Dear All,
I think I need to find doom 3 iso files so I can burn the DVDs......
Then I can get at the data files.
I will google around and see if I can find a repository containing them.
Cheers
MF
PS I am going to get it here:

Is this a legitimate source?
I tried running doom anyway to see what would happen:

It seems not to be able to find a config file.
Perhaps it has not been put in the correct place.
It turns out the data files are already included in the gentoo packages - so no need to look for them elsewhere!

Mike,
You're better off using the dhewm3 fork of the ID source code drop for the ID Tech 3 game engine.
See: Gentoo Portage Overlays: games-fps/dhewm.
Then at least your building the game engine from source against your more modern system libraries and SDL2.
Works a charm - last time I played. Including compatibility with many common Doom 3 mods from ModDB.
I typically pull the required packed game data files from a Steam install of Doom 3 - which for the hardcore can of course be done under Wine...
I am sure there many other "shady places" to get the required data files...

Many thanks for the advice,
As it turns out I tried running steam OS......
In the end I tried the steam runtime =0 start up command
and it fired up and updated some files and grumbled about not having these libraries:
Code: | libva.so.1
libvdpau.so.1
libva.so.1
libva-x11.so.1 |
and then conked.
It said it wanted some 32 bit versions of them I think.
Perhaps a trick of some kind could avoid that or bypass it.
Useful tricks abound in gentoo it would seem.
Comments appreciated.

Stop Press!!!!!!
I have got steam running now and created an account etc.
Does doom 3 count as a steam game or a non steam game?
Sorry about dumb noob questions. |

If you bought a steam download key somewhere or bought the game from steam itself, it's a steam game — it will show up in steam's games list. If you paid for physical media or some other download access (maybe GoG sells this game), then that's not a steam game. Some places give both a steam key and a regular download. |

Then I can get at the data files. | Why would you burn the ISO to physical media just so you can mount the media? If you had the ISO, you could mount it directly via loopback and save the media. Ant P. wrote: | If you paid for physical media or some other download access (maybe GoG sells this game), then that's not a steam game. | GOG sells Doom 3: BFG Edition. I do not know if this is the same edition mikefot is trying to use. |

AFAIK, BFG edition is just a tweaked proprietary version of the game engine and the data files are the same (probably with the expansions included). |

Dear All,
A great many thanks for the help here.
I think I am beginning to understand steam and the doom 3 game relationship etc a bit better.
I think I recall reading on various web pages that the source code for doom 3 was given away to the open source community.
If I understood it correctly, the Gnu Public Licence (or a variant of it) was used to do this.
At first I thought that meant that you would not need to buy any software to be able to run doom 3 and so any copy of the data files
needed to run it would not be something that you would have to pay for etc.
But I now consider that to be false; that is to say, although the source code had been given away, the data files were not.
So you would have to buy a licence to some software that you could either burn on a DVD and install on the PC or use the
loopback method helpfully pointed out above - I think I will try this at some point it would save on the DVDs.
Unlike other software titles, identifying a legitimate source of the software is not perhaps so easy with game software if it is an old game that is not used so much
by the mainstream gaming community.
But apparently it seems GOG is a genuine legitimate retailer of the Doom 3 game and I assume if I get a copy from them then no one on the Gentoo
forums would be concerned about that.
One of the posters above pointed out that the data files for doom 3 could be obtained by running steam.
I am not exactly sure here, but I think that means either one of two things:
Either:
(a) Steam ships with the same data files that happen to be required by doom 3 and can be made use of by the game if you run it
(as a non steam game coming from the gentoo package install).
or
(b)The poster installed the data files from a separate dvd or iso file (using loopback etc) that they had purchased e.g. from a company like GOG or even
steam itself and ran it on steam.
If I still haven't quite understood it correctly, please can you fill me in a bit more here.
Cheers

I'm going to guess that you were actually talking about the stand-alone Steam client for Linux?
SteamOS is a full-blown Linux operating system based on Debian. :] _________________ Kindest of regardses. |

Many thanks again here...
I had forgotten about steam OS being its own distro etc.
I also run debian and steam installs easily on it.
But I still want to get it running on gentoo.
Thanks

@mikefot
You appear to be very confused...
So lets try and sort that out!
The id Tech 4 (game engine) was open sourced in 2011. See: Wikipedia: Id Tech 4.
The game Doom 3 remains a proprietary property of id software.
In that the game assets were never released openly.
So any downloads, of iso files, for the game discs will be for pirate copies of the game.
The game is still sold commercially.
The original game is still sold via first/second hand retail DVD/CD (3 set) and on Steam.
The original Doom 3 game is not for sale on GOG - only the id Tech 5 reimplementation as Doom 3 BFG.
As far as I can tell from GOG store entry (which is not very clear!)
Although Doom 3 was originally ported to Linux (hobby project of an id employee) - the game is not sold commercially for Linux.
So you either buy a retail copy of Doom 3 (for Windows) or you can purchase it on Steam (for Windows).
The easiest ways to get the game assets - the missing bit required to make the Open Source GPL'd dhewm game engine useful - are:
- Purchase the retail discs. Copy the game data archives straight off the retail discs.
- Install the Windows version of Steam using Wine. Purchase Doom 3 (preferably in a Steam sale!!). Install Doom 3 to your HDD/SSD. Copy the game data archives from your Steam library.

The game is still sold commercially. | Minor nit: it is possible (although perhaps unlikely) that authorized digital resellers would issue an ISO. Admittedly, it's more likely they would provide it in some other form, but it's not guaranteed that an ISO is a pirated copy. (It is however very likely that any free ISO is a pirated copy, since it would make no sense for an authorized reseller to give out free copies in any form, except perhaps as part of a very time-limited promotion. GOG does such promotions on occasion, but usually for much older titles where the potential for revenue is very low.) |
