Call me a Debian refugee, or a turncoat begging for forgiveness, either way, I've come crawling back after a literal decade in binary-land. 
I'm totally not fleeing systemd, honest... OpenRC is quite nice though. 
So how is Gentoo these days? Still got those "gentoo is dead" rumors going around? The forum looks reasonably lively to me.
I'll need to get my compiler foo screwed on straight again before I'll be of much help-the-newbs use though, you guys do still have those, right?
Any new and exciting toys to brea... err, test in the meantime? |

Well, emerge has become much smarter than 10 years ago, and from my user's perspective the distribution is very strong nowadays.

Those rumors seem not to die. But same goes for Gentoo - it's still very well alive. :)
Also if you like systemd, you can have it on Gentoo. ;) Gentoo mainly supports OpenRC and systemd, but you can have others too.

I don't hate systemd as some do, but I definitely prefer something a little more hackable, and a little less all-consuming.
I played with openrc on Artix, and it was awesome. Unfortunately the binary-hell of using Artix with arch packages was not.

Choice is why I'm back here. Choice in $binary_distro is becoming increasingly difficult, particularly around init.
There are some that still provide options, but right now they're all young and buggy. Most "mainstream" distros involve considerable pain if you stray form the standard configuration.

Excellent. I have a couple of SSDs coming to play with.
I've been using zfs for data stores pretty much since the zol project released a usable native module, but I've never had / on zfs. |

just a couple notes, that should probably go up on that wiki page...
while genkernel does work, i wouldn't recommend it. you'll wind up with slow boot problems most likely. use dracut instead.
grub also doesn't support half of the feature flags. you don't have to use them, but you might want to switch to efi booting which should allow you to turn on a few more. there are a couple flags that you can't turn on either way, but the zfs/zpool tools should prevent you from setting them if bootfs is set.

I have a historical personal dislike of dracut, which I may have to re-evaluate. It's probably related to a general dislike of all things redhat, I was one of those poor sods who used redhat 7 back in 2k.
I expect I'll investigate those genkernel problems first.
And yeah, that wiki.

What you'll notice much more going forward running updates is that soft blockers get handled automatically, handing the required un-merge stuff. Only hard blockers require manual intervention. This was a massive improvement.
