Hey all,

I run KDE plasma 5 and after the latest plasma-meta update and an nvidia module rebuild, when I run startx, it goes to the initial Plasma loading screen, then back to the terminal where it starts displaying scrolling debuggin ginformation. It's the same on kernels 4.9.76 and 4.14-8-r1, both with independent external module rebuilds. I'm on another computer so I can't copy/paste the text, nor can I scroll up to see the initial information. Not sure where to start troubleshooting, any help is appreciated.

Code:

$ emerge --info

Sorry to post an image instead of text, but wgetpaste wouldn't give a a link when used with startx. This link shows what kind of debugging text I'm getting instead of a desktop gui:

I tried testing X independently of kde by taking startkde out of ~/.xinitrc and emerging x11-wm/twm and x11-terms/xterm then running startx, but didn't get the test windows to appear. It quit out of the xserver instead. Does anyone have an idea what might be going on?

Here is the associated log:

EugeneTheJeep,

Tells that you have both an intel and nVidia card.

Do you have an Optimus Graphics System ?
The above is the right combination of parts but
Code:
[176986.383] (II) NVIDIA(0): Virtual screen size determined to be 1440 x 900
is unusual with Optimus as the nVidia GPU is not connected to any display surfaces.
A working Optimus Graphics System requires that the Intel chip set is configured, which you don't have.

Your debug info my well be correct on VT 1 before Xorg sets up and switches to
Code:
[176985.875] (--) using VT number 7

Is there an image waiting for you if press Ctl-Alt-F7 together to switch to VT 7 ?

No. Sorry, I wasn't quite clear enough in my last post. When I invoke startx, the screen goes black for a brief moment then it returns to the terminal and shows me the following information:

NeddySeagoon,

I can't say for sure that I have Optimus graphics system. I'm running a GT 730 on a desktop, and can't find any info that indicates that it uses optimus. I checked Nvidia's website and it states pretty explicitly that it's a technology for notebook cards. Either way, I'm recompiling the kernel to include support for the onboard Intel and will check to see if that fixes the issue.

Thanks for lending your insight.

OK so I recompiled the kernel with both nvidia and intel supoort. I have only one monitor with a VGA plug. This is how it behaves when booting with the monitor plugged into one of the two cards:

GT730
It shows the bios splash screen, then shows part of the kernel boot process, with openrc starting the various daemons. At a certain point, the text ceases to scroll, but I can see the hard drive led flashing and hear it spinning, so I know it's continuing to boot. If I unplug the monitor and plug it into the intel card, I get no signal to the monitor. All I can do is reboot at this point.

Intel
It shows nothing up to a certain point, then it starts to show the middle boot process with openrc starting various daemons, I'm assuming about where the nvidia card ceases to show these things. After it finishes booting, I'm able to log in, but when I startx, It gives me an error basically saying it cant find any screens, then it terminates the x server.

So it appears to be handing off the signal from the nvidia card to the intel card in the middle of the boot process, and the intel card can't get a connection to the x server on the intel card because it can't find any screens.

EugeneTheJeep,

That's not Opimus.

Your complete dmesg output and kersel .config would be useful.
They need to go onto a pastebin site. wgetpaste can help with that.

Wild guess. Go into your BIOS setup and disable the Intel video.
It should not appear in lspci once you are successful.

In your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, tell Xorg to use the
Code:
[176985.868] (--) PCI:*(0:1:0:0) 10de:1287:3842:3731 rev 161, Mem @ 0xea000000/16777216, 0xe0000000/134217728, 0xe8000000/33554432, I/O @ 0x00002000/128, BIOS @ 0x????????/131072

That's adding
Code:
BusID "PCI:0:1:0"
to the Section "Device"
I have a feeling that when that's missing Xorg will try and use the first device.

Here is the requested output, linked, not copypasta'd, for the sake of brevity:

dmesg:
https://paste.pound-python.org/show/CYMdM7yS4ZSHDgSIF8D0/

.config:
https://paste.pound-python.org/show/rMrwXMMPPeZkBKLwgvYy/

I disabled the intel card in the BIOS, at least as much as the menu system allows. It's an old Intel motherboard with MBR BIOS. The only option was to change the primary card from the onboard intel card to either PCI ext or PCIe ext, so I changed it to PCI ext. There was no change in the boot behavior.

I added BusID "PCI:0:1:0" to the devices block in xorg.conf:

Code:

Section "Device"
          Identifier "Nvidia Card"
          Driver      "nvidia"
          BusID      "PCI:0:1:0"
EndSection

The only change is that I got no signal whatsoever from the nvidia card. I unmerged x11-terms/xterm and x11-wm/twm, and put "exec startkde" back into ~/.xinitrc

I then tested with and without BusID "PCI:0:1:0.

What I did was boot with the monitor plugged into the intel card, log in, then plug the monitor into the nvidia card and run startx.

Without that line in xorg.conf, I was able to see the KDE splash screen before it started went back to scrolling kde debugging text. The difference is that the debugging text (like what is shown in the image I linked at the top of this thread, second post or so) now goes to the intel card instead of the nvidia card, I'm assuming because of the kernel recompile with intel support

With that line added to xorg.conf, i got no signal from the nvidia card using the same method described just above. It appears to immediately disconnect from the xserver.

Either way, I'm not getting any connection to the x server from the intel card, but my goal is to get it working on the nvidia card; I couldn't care less about the onboard intel.

EugeneTheJeep,

Lets go for the nvida card then.

dmesg shows
Code:
[    0.000000] Console: colour VGA+ 80x25
[    0.167580] console [netcon0] enabled
[    0.167665] netconsole: network logging started
[   10.169423] [drm] Memory usable by graphics device = 512M
[   10.169426] [drm] Replacing VGA console driver
[   10.170241] Console: switching to colour dummy device 80x25
[   10.176024] [drm] Supports vblank timestamp caching Rev 2 (21.10.2013).
[   10.176025] [drm] Driver supports precise vblank timestamp query.
[   10.177094] [drm] RC6 disabled, disabling runtime PM support
[   10.177098] [drm] initialized overlay support
[   10.177240] [drm] Initialized i915 1.6.0 20170818 for 0000:00:02.0 on minor 0
[   10.253924] Console: switching to colour frame buffer device 175x65
[   10.270924] i915 0000:00:02.0: fb0: inteldrmfb frame buffer device

So the VGA console is enabled. Good, you will need that and the console is coming up on the intel device.

The nVidia binary blob driver is incompatible with the kernel Direct Rendering Manager so the Intel driver must be removed from the kernel.

The Wiki Page should work, except for the paragraph abut

OK,

I removed support for the intel card from the kernel. I went over the wiki page you linked to make sure the kernel is correctly configured. I did the same for X via the Xorg guide on the wiki. After these steps, I recompiled, reinstalled modules, and carefully made sure all modules were correctly listed in /etc/conf.d/modules.

I made sure that OpenGL is enabled through nvidia via eselect and double checked /etc/portage/make.conf to ensure that INPUT_DEVICES and VIDEO_CARDS are correctly set. I ran env-update, source /etc/profile, and eselect opengl set nvidia.

When I ran glxinfo | grep direct, I got

Code:

Error: unable to open display

This was true with PCI:0:1:0 in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, and without.

When PCI:0:1:0 was in xorg.conf, startx terminated immediately saying no screens found.

With that line commented out, it reverted to the original behavior described at the very beginning of this thread.

EugeneTheJeep,

Put PCI:0:1:0 back into /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
Attempt to start X.

Maybe I have the PCI:0:1:0 wrong?

Pastebin dmesg and the resulting Xorg.0.log.
Sight of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf might be useful too.

EugeneTheJeep,

The log gives the entire PciID of your nVidia card as 0:1:0:0.

The error is
Code:
[  4265.784] (EE) No devices detected.
so maybe it needs the last :0 in xorg.conf.

man xorg.conf:
       BusID  "bus-id"
This specifies the bus  location  of  the  graphics  card.   For
PCI/AGP    cards,    the    bus-id    string    has   the   form
              PCI:bus:device:function (e.g., “PCI:1:0:0” might be  appropriate
for an AGP card).  This field is usually optional in single-head
configurations when using the primary graphics card.  In  multi-
head  configurations, or when using a secondary graphics card in
a single-head configuration, this entry is mandatory.  Its  main
purpose  is to make an unambiguous connection between the device
section and the hardware it is representing.   This  information
can usually be found by running the pciaccess tool scanpci.

scanpci tells me
Code:
pci bus 0x0001 cardnum 0x00 function 0x00: vendor 0x10de device 0x0614
NVIDIA Corporation G92 [GeForce 9800 GT]

scanpci yielded:
Code:

pci bus 0x0001 cardnum 0x00 function 0x00: vendor 0x10de device 0x1287
NVIDIA Corporation GK208 [GeForce GT 730]

I modified xorg.conf to reflect this information:
Code:

BusID     "PCI:1:0:0"

After running startx, it successfully recognized the card. However, I got the KDE Plasma splash screen, and then it went back to scrolling debugging text, the original behavior described at the top of the post. At least it isn't immediately disconnecting from the X server now, I suppose.

EugeneTheJeep,

That's progress. Is it a KDE or Xorg problem?
dmesg and Xorg.0.log may both help here.

EugeneTheJeep,

That all looks fairly normal.

Code:
emerge -1 twm xterm xclock
to tot something nice and simple to test with.
However you start Xorg move it out ef the way.
If its ~/.xinitrc, rename the file so its not found.

Now startx will do its default thing and start three xterms, xclock all wrapped up in twm.
If this works, Xorg is OK and the problem in with KDE.
Conversely, if this fails, its Xorg.

If its KDE, start a new thread as I'm a MATE and Xfce4 user.

Those windows came up, so X is fine. My initial mistake was commenting out exec startdke from .xinitrc instead of renaming the file entirely. I'll start a new thread and see if I can get KDE working.

THANK YOU for your time and patience.
