U.S. Longest Serving Astronaut Dead at 87 Quote: | NASA says legendary astronaut John Young, who walked on the moon and later commanded the first space shuttle flight, has died. Young was 87.
The space agency said Young died Friday night following complications from pneumonia.
NASA said Young was the only agency astronaut to go into space as part of the Gemini, Apollo and space shuttle programs, and the first to fly into space six times. He was the ninth man to walk on the moon. |

When they talk about The Right Stuff, they are talking about John Young. That man did more than most ever dream of doing.
He literally has been a hero of mine for most of my life.

My condolences!
My three year old pup is the best dog I've ever known and I am dreading when that era ends! I'm sure I'll be a wreck! _________________

I've always resisted getting a dog for this reason. I've always wanted German Shepherds.

More than anything though, please just keep in mind the responsibility. They are a lot of work, and are completely dependent. Only get one if you can commit. |

I said the same thing after our Lynch passed. We waited a few years and now have another greatest dog ever in Chloe. If the time comes, you'll know. Again, my condolences. _________________ The Future Ain't What It Used To Be

So sorry to read that pjp, missed it earlier this week. Having lost 2 in two years (the 'Fat Brothers') I can fully relate.
Now only one of the three in my avatar remains, and she's 11 this year. The wife I have a conniption every time she sneezes at this point.

Unfortunately, I've now lost 3 cats, 2 dogs and a parent since 2010. All of those losses were made easier because of having the others. That may have made yesterday that much more difficult. He was a super healer up until the end, including a minor diagnostic surgery. He just couldn't beat the cancer. A not insubstantial piece of me went with him.

I probably won't get one. I like dogs, I know the amount of responsibility involved. Not looking to go that route. _________________ "Defeat is a state of mind. No one is ever defeated, until defeat has been accepted as a reality." -- Bruce Lee |

Ursula K. Le Guin Great author. Read Left Hand of Darkness decades ago. A visionary in many respects. _________________ The Future Ain't What It Used To Be

Saw that earlier. I had her name on my list of authors to try. The NYT article made her (or her writing) sound a bit agenda driven. I guess in that regard she could be considered a visionary. _________________ Those who know what's best for us must rise and save us from ourselves. |

John Mahoney, ‘Frasier’ Dad, Dies at 77
Apparently a Brit.
Great character. The show would have had to be very different to work without him. _________________ Those who know what's best for us must rise and save us from ourselves. |

Lt. Jim Downing, second oldest survivor of Pearl Harbor, passes away at 104 Quote: | Downing was born on Aug. 22, 1913 in Oak Grove, Missouri and spent most of his childhood in Plevna, Missouri. He left home for the Navy in 1932 when he was 19-years-old, where his first assignment was on the USS West Virginia, where served as gunner's mate 1st class and postmaster.
He met his future wife Morena while he was stationed in Southern California in 1940. They married in Hawaii in July 1941.
Just 149 days later, their lives were changed forever by the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. During the attack, Downing memorized the name tags of the fallen men around him so he could write a personal letter to their families.
Downing's Navy career culminated with him becoming the commanding officer of the USS Patapsco from 1952 until 1955 during the Korean War. |

Quote: | He once wrote that the ideal athlete was one who enjoyed a few drinks and even the odd cigarette.
"As soon as I ceased to be a student," he said, "I always knew I would stop being an athlete."
"You don't have to make the rest of your life boring to be a good runner," he said. | I guess if I go back to school to become a doctor and take up smoking, I'd have the makings of an athlete. I was pretty traumatized after losing my pets (cats) in 2012 I still don't have pets today. A part of me wants to, the other part doesn't want to deal with end of life. (One cat was 17, and was with me since high school.) |
