MAGIC! _________________ Chemtrails don't actually exist.
The optical illusion of seeing white streaks crisscrossing a blue background in the presence of sunlight is a common hallucination that comes from drinking fluoridated water. |

The joke is on you, global warming tweaked mercury's freezing point. _________________ "People are the worst, the worst thing about music is that people play it". M. Patton. |

Perhaps the tube was under partial vacuum. I don't know the pressure curve for mercury's melting point, so I'm not sure, it might hit its triple point before hitting -50°F. _________________

Can someone put this into normal language please. No-one know what 'F is these days.
Or is this one of those threads where retards go "today wasn't as hot as 1975, global warming is a myth..."
It's a fact, we're causing it. Get over it _________________ "Sex: breakfast of champions" - James Hunt |

It is real easy: -40 °C and -40 °F are the same temperature.
From there, °F goes up 1.8 degrees per °C. Conversely (reciprocalversly?) °C goes up 1/1.8 == 5/9 degree per °C. Near -40 you can approximate 1.8 as 2, so -39°F is about -39.5°C
From this you can derive a nice symmetric and easy-to-remember conversion. Much nicer, in my opinion, than the "+/- 32" one that's taught in school.°F = (9/5) * (°C + 40) - 40
°C = (5/9) * (°F + 40) - 40
Similar patterns (but not as nice) also apply for other temperatures where °C and °F have a simple relation. For everyday temperatures, pick one or two of these "landmarks" to remember:10 °C == 50 °F
20 °C == 68 °F
25 °C == 77 °F
30 °C == 86 °F
40 °C == 104 °F
50 °C == 122 °F Then apply them to a modified formula, as in this example:°F = (9/5) * (°C - 20) + 68
°C = (5/9) * (°F - 68) + 20
As before, for temperatures around the "pivot", approximate the (9/5) as 2 (and the 5/9 as 1/2) to get a fast estimate of temperature in the other system. With a bit of practice it's not hard to do these in your head, in realtime during a conversation. _________________ Humility means not having to eat as much crow when you are shown to be wrong. |
