I would like to obtain a sparc workstation for development purposes. Since I am kind of ignorant to the SPARC platform, can some of you guys recommend some good models I can obtain for $ <= 1200.
As in terms of speed, how fast would that recommended model be compared to a x86 or ppc machine?
Is the above, 64-bit or 32-bit sparc?
Thanks,

Here's another:

I am responding to your query on one of these, (but with less memory).
A U2 2x300MHz will go for less on eBay and from my point ov view, is also
a nice development machine. (The 400MHz CPUs themselves go for $200-$250)
I would search eBay for Sun U2, sun U60 to get a feel for prices, but I
think the U2 is probably a better buy. (Subjectively, a S60 2x450 is "more
faster" than a U2 2x400 than the CPU differential would suggest; especially
since I suspect but have not confirmed that they are actually the same CPU.)
eBay prices for these systems seem high, but for U2 not outrageous. U60
prices are out of line, and you should be able to do better on, say,
<comp.sys.sun.wanted> where you should be able to run across a U60
2x450 for well under your $1200 ceiling.
I'm rambling, but the point is that for $1200 you should be able to get
a nice dual-processor sparc system and have enough change left over
to configure it to your needs.
These are 64-bit sparc, userland 32-bit. They are "slower" than what you
are used to, probably, but I think they are good value. (Purely subjective
without anything to back it up.) |

I just bought an Ultra 80 from these guys:
http://www.stores.ebay.com/id=10487339&ssPageName=L2
for about 1100 including shipping. It came with everything I needed except an adaptor to connect my pc monitor to the sun frame buffer. I got one of those for about 9 dollars also from ebay. The system was in great condition, was packaged really well for shipping and works great.
They also have a store at www.anysystem.com but the prices are quite a bit higher then their ebay store. I don't have a lot of experience with sparc hardware. This ultra 80 is my first. It only has one processor but I'm really surprised at how well it performs. I really enjoy using it.
Performance wise, its about on par with my ibook 600 except hard disc reads/writes barely impact the cpu and compiles are WAY faster. I installed gentoo over the weekend. I started on friday afternoon with the stage 3 and by monday afternoon I had X, gnome, mozilla, gaim, gftp, gqview, gimp and had done an emerge -u system.
