The last 4 times I've updated world app-misc/tracker has been pulled in by something (gnome I assume) and after logging in again my machine becomes horribly unresponsive. When I check top it shows tracker-extract using 50-100% CPU and the wait times being high (due to disk access).

The first couple of times I just ended up uninstalling it as I didn't have time to mess about trying to work out why it was causing such problems. The last time it did it, I did extensive searches and tried all the options I could in tracker-preferences with but still could not find a way to either make it index only when the machine was idle or index slower so as not to make the machine unresponsive.

Has anyone got tracker working nicely? If so how?

So another round of updates and the following day my machine freezes for 6 minutes; when I finally get to 'top' its tracker at the top...

I don't seem to be able to mask the package (since its an install dependency of Gnome) - am I missing a method of masking it?

And how can I be the only person with this issue; is there something unusual about my hardware/set-up?

Hmmm... That's already in my make.conf - however its clearly not being taken notice of. I wonder if I've missed a news item about how to set USE variables?

Code:

alex@lamech ~/workspace/zcps-dev $ cat /etc/make.conf
# These settings were set by the catalyst build script that automatically
# built this stage.
# Please consult /usr/share/portage/config/make.conf.example for a more
# detailed example.
CFLAGS="-O2 -pipe"
CXXFLAGS="-O2 -pipe"
# WARNING: Changing your CHOST is not something that should be done lightly.
# Please consult http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/change-chost.xml before changing.
CHOST="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu"
MAKEOPTS="-j5"
# These are the USE flags that were used in addition to what is provided by the
# profile used for building.
#USE="mmx sse sse2"
USE="-libav -test mime imap mysql mozsvg mozcalendar mozdevelop gimp gtk2 alsa xinerama tiff gnome acpi cdr encode fam fbcon gtkhtml mmx mozilla opengl svg caps -qt3 policykit tetex truetype unicode xml2 xmlrpc bluetooth evo irmc f77 usb eds -hal udev dvb xosd dvd dts v4l wxwindows stream live aim aac a52 X bash-completion bluetooth bonobo calendar cjk cups curl dbus -ffmpeg gif samba xv xvid flac mad ogg theora vorbis dvdr nvidia xvmc -kerberos -nsplugin beagle -mono acl glitz X pdf -kde amr  aac win32codecs rtsp fftw truetype type1 gnutls emerald branding python x264 policykit consolekit sqlite fts3 gdu extras device-mapper kdrive ldap java sasl automount gsm pulseaudio -nss sipim -bindist systemd icu apache2 -tracker"

You can check what may be pulling tracker on with equery depends tracker ... equery is part of app-portage/gentoolkit ... I'm using gnome-light, so maybe some other part of gnome is pulling it.

What exactly do you see that leads you to believe that your USE setting is not respected? What command did you run, and what output did it produce?
