Gentoo Linux Security Advisory

Title: LibXcursor: User-assisted execution of arbitrary code (GLSA 201801-04)
Severity: normal
Exploitable: local, remote
Date: 2018-01-07
Bug(s): #639062
ID: 201801-04

Synopsis

A vulnerability in LibXcursor might allow remote attackers to
execute arbitrary code.

Background

X.Org X11 libXcursor runtime library.

Affected Packages

Package: x11-libs/libXcursor
Vulnerable: < 1.1.15
Unaffected: >= 1.1.15
Architectures: All supported architectures

Description

It was discovered that libXcursor is prone to several heap overflows
when parsing malicious files.

Impact

A remote attacker, by enticing a user to process a specially crafted
cursor file, could possibly execute arbitrary code with the privileges of
the process or cause a Denial of Service condition.

Workaround

There is no known workaround at this time.

Resolution

All LibXcursor users should upgrade to the latest version:
Code:
# emerge --sync
      # emerge --ask --oneshot --verbose ">=x11-libs/libXcursor-1.1.15"
