This was the only holiday song I /needed/ to hear every year. I miss the anticipation of hoping to catch it, and then again if I caught it already in progress. The experience was more rewarding.

Later I looked forward to this one too, but it wasn't as important. Bonus.

I had to find a non-live version to appreciate it. I sampled a handful of different songs, and while none of them were bad, I didn't find any of them compelling. I think I like her music more than lyrics.

Curious preference, and I freely admit that I might be reading too much into it. Still, with that in mind, perhaps you might try these:

Live performances nearly always sound like garbage. The rare exception is when the recording filters out as much "liveness" as possible. A couple of examples.. one, Pink Floyd's Delicate Sound of Thunder (I maintain it would have been even better had it been recorded in a studio). Two, I've also heard Phish does really well with live recordings, but I can't confirm. Other than the experience of being present at a live event, I can't fathom why anyone would want the inferior sound quality. And as I don't care for masses of ignorant mob behavior, I avoid crowds and live events.

EDIT: lol

That is a terrible rendition of that song. Joan from the seventies shouldn't allow Joan from the tens to play her songs.

Yeah but still being able to do it 40 years later is pretty cool

Your version is better because of the hair alone :D

Just a selection of typical seasonal music:

Ok pjp, can I ask your opinion on this live version. Same song but it shows more guitar control and the bass is a double bass instead of a guitar

OK, so using a laptop with Sennheiser in ear headphones, it sounds a lot better, but maybe too much bass. But that may be intentional, or my hardware. For a live performance, the quality was pretty good. Now just imagine how good it could be if it were a studio recording! :P

Related.

Audiophiles does _not_ like concerts. Too much wind, too much noice, etc.

Dream Theater did minimalistic errors and really did the instruments justice.
Watching a band live is a bit more than just audio refined sounds. To me .......and many, many more.

I'm with you mostly. I'm a big Stones fan but their songs sound shit live - but when you are there you kinda get caught up in the performance.

There are some versions that just seem to be best live. For instance the best version of Knocking On Heaven's Door was done live at the Freddy Mercury Tribute Concert by Guns N' Roses: https://youtu.be/M4UDkROC1po?t=6m29s

cokey, I know you have a soft spot for this kind of things, so here is a short video of an orthodox jew singing "Wish you were here", I shot this 3 days ago in the middle of Tel Aviv.
