PostPosted: Fri Dec 15, 2017 8:42 pm    Post subject: SOLVED tidying up some circular dependencies after a sync Reply with quote

Dear Folks,

I ran a sync update on an installation I have on an FX 8350 box.

I am running the stable amd64 version of Gentoo on it.

I have some dependency problems.

See here:

Code:
bong portage # emerge --ask --update @world

I need to run a preserved build emerge job to fix things here.

But it crashes.

I will post some more output on this shortly.

Dear All,

I ran
Code:
emerge @preserved-rebuild

Emerge tried to work through 71 packages but the very first one (package sys-apps/texinfo-6.3) crashed.

The output from
Code:
emerge --info '=sys-apps/texinfo-6.3::gentoo'

is here:

https://pastebin.com/zJ78pbFs

The build.log output is here:

https://paste.pound-python.org/show/OzLZjuBJ5OtQ7TNbiJZf/

I will post more output if requested.

Comments appreciated.

Dear All,

I have worked on the problem for some time but it still needs further attention.

Here is the current output of
Code:

https://pastebin.com/7KfKtQxx

I then ran the emerge preserved rebuild command again:

The same crash occurs again:

Dear All,

I tried the following world update command:

Code:
bong portage # emerge -avuDU --with-bdeps=y --keep-going=y @world

 * IMPORTANT: 19 news items need reading for repository 'gentoo'.
 * Use eselect news read to view new items.

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies -

!!! The ebuild selected to satisfy "sys-apps/busybox" has unmet requirements.

The following REQUIRED_USE flag constraints are unsatisfied:

I tried including some of the use flags recommended here in my make.conf file but it doesn't seem to remove this error message.

Comments appreciated.

Code:
The following REQUIRED_USE flag constraints are unsatisfied:
    pam? ( !static )

So why do you have USE=static enabled?

Code:
 * IMPORTANT: 19 news items need reading for repository 'gentoo'.
 * Use eselect news read to view new items.

Read your news.

Many thanks for the help here.

I had to remove both pam and static to get sys-apps/busybox

to compile.

But it has.

Dear All,

I ran
Code:
emerge -avuDU --with-bdeps=y --keep-going=y @world
again.

The output is here:

https://pastebin.com/Prt2cxEt

It grumbles about dev-lang/perl:
Code:
emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy "dev-lang/perl:0/5.22=[-build(-)]".

I ran emerge dev-lang/perl with no complaint.

I have unmerged ALL of the packages that are giving a dependency grumble here but it does make the errors go away.

Comments and suggestions appreciated.

For circular dependencies error you can post
Code:
# grep -ri python /etc/portage/package.use*

Try to comment line how you enable python_targets_python3_4 and then launch emerge again

most circular deps comes because portage is adding a package and look then if its deps are met already, and if not, it add them.
while when adding them, it could be the dep is also a dep of the package that trigger it (so circular), and it then add again and again...

you can exit the circular loop by hinting portage to stop looking at what it should add by telling it what you want have.
it mean adding each circular package to your command line, so portage knows already they will be use and stop looking if it need to add them or not.

emerge world circular1 circular2, which mean you do like that:
Code:
bong portage # emerge -avuDU --with-bdeps=y --keep-going=y @world
* Error: circular dependencies:

(dev-python/six-1.11.0:0/0::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) depends on
(dev-python/setuptools-34.0.2-r1:0/0::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) (buildtime)
(dev-python/six-1.11.0:0/0::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) (buildtime)

circular dep with six and setuptools ->
Code:
emerge -avuDU --with-bdeps=y --keep-going=y @world --oneshot setuptools six

(don't forget --oneshot to not add them to world)

however, if this doesn't do the trick, you can aim specially for them only and tell portage to stop looking at all deps:
Code:
emerge -avu --oneshot --nodeps setuptools six

stay aware that they might fail to build if one of them need another deps that is not yet install in your system as portage won't try to install them, and worst, they could build and install, but fail to run, which may broke your system until this is fix, but if they are install, next emerge should add their missing deps ( don't use --nodeps on next emerge).
So --nodeps is dangerous and should be use with caution (and extreme caution if package is in system), you can do quickpkg dev-python/six dev-python/setuptools to make binaries of them before going with --nodeps.

PostPosted: Sat Dec 16, 2017 1:18 pm    Post subject: python target comments... Reply with quote

Dear All,

On the subject of the python targets, I notice that in this installation of gentoo I seem to have porthole installed.

Now in the advanced emerge option in porthole, the use flag options dialog box includes buttons you can check for python flavours including python 3_4 etc.

I don't seem to have any python targets set at all in the make.conf file.....

So at present the porthole suggestion above is the only other way that I can see that a new python target could have been set beyond the defaults that
exist in the profile directory.

I will read up on python comment lines etc and see if I can come up with something better that the above on this.

Looking at the dependencies on both six and setuptools, you should be able to work around the circular dependency by either installing six-1.10.0 or setuptools-30.4.0 (both are older versions than what portage is wanting to install, but doesn't have the dependency on each other). That will allow you to work around the circular dependency since one of them would then be already installed; and both will end up getting updated to the newest that portage wants.

Note: Do make sure you specify the exact version when doing it this way. Also be sure to use -1 or --oneshot when you install either either of these, so you don't pollute your world file and cause more problems later on.

PostPosted: Sat Dec 16, 2017 6:27 pm    Post subject: use of specfic version oneshot install idea to fix circ deps Reply with quote

Dear All,

I ran
Code:
emerge --oneshot =dev-python/six-1.10.0
and it compiled OK.

But when I ran
Code:
emerge --oneshot =dev-python/setuptools-30.4.0
I still got the circular dependence grumbling.

So I googled around to find the gentoo package page for setuptools to see if I could find an even older version of the package.

All I could find were brand new ones.....

So I thought to try the newest one in case something randomly good might happen.

I did
Code:
emerge --oneshot =dev-python/setuptools-36.7.2

It wanted me to add a use flag change possibly because of new work on the package.

And it compiled..........

Go figure.

I then did the
Code:
emerge keep going with b deps world
update and to my surprise it is now happily chuntering away installing 253 packages........

More on this later.

Regards

Dear All,

Most of the packages installed OK.

I am now running gcc 6.4.0.

I had to reinstall gentoolkit, the xserver base and nuoveau and eudev/evdev packages to get rid of some funny blockages.

selinux is not working properly.

I am getting there.

PostPosted: Sun Dec 17, 2017 5:39 pm    Post subject: problem with keyboard function on login Reply with quote

Dear All,

I carried on and upgraded and tidied up things and I also installed and compiled the latest 4.12.12 kernel.

Grub with the help of os-prober saw the debian install and the genkernel kernel and the 4.9.0 kernel plus the nerw 4.12.12 kernel above for gentoo amd64.

When I boot the machine and choose the genkernel kernel for gentoo then the keyboard lights up while the OS fires up and then briefly gioes dark and then lights up again and I can login etc and use the OS and lxde window manager and firefox-bin (recently installed) etc.

But when I try to choose either the 4.9.0 kernel or the 4.12.12 kernel, the keyboard lights up at first and then just before the login prompt it goes dark and I can't enter in the username and password etc.........

Could it be that I am missing an entry in the make.conf file or a package for the keyboartd that not been installed?

I think I have installed most of them now.

My make.conf file is listed in an earlier posting on this thread.

Comments and suggestions appreciated.

Regards

Dear All,

I have found a web page here:

https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/USB/Guide

I don't remember seeing the HID thing when I first installed Gentoo on this FX 8350 box but it might be something I need to do here.

I could try using a dumber older keyboard that doesn't light up.

More on this later.

Dear All,

The old keyboard is recognized.

xfce works now with the genkernel kernel but the 4.9.0 and 4.12.12 kernels suffer from X11 crashes.

I need to check the var log files to see why they died.

It could be a graphics card kernel config problem of some kind.

I am using an Nivida engt 430 card as I recall.

More on this later.

Dear All,

I am posting the Xorg output for a successful X11 session using the genkernel kernel.

It is here:

localhost log # wgetpaste /var/log/Xorg.0.log
Your paste can be seen here:

https://paste.pound-python.org/show/t71IZlptUJRjkE7PBee5/

Code:
localhost log #
[/code]

The dmesg file is here:

Code:
localhost log # wgetpaste dmesg
Your paste can be seen here:

https://paste.pound-python.org/show/3cfQ1mc1vVVqHHQfrT3a/
Code:
localhost log #
[code]

I will follow up with the 4.12.12 kernel Xorg crash log files shortly.

Dear All,

The Xorg crash using kernel 4.12.12 is posted here:

Code:
localhost log # wgetpaste /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old

I think I am missing a kernel setting for the nvidia engt 430 card of some kind.

I will look into it and try changing some settings and flags in kernel and recompile and see if the problem is cured.
