I did:

Code:
md -p /etc/portage/patches/app-emulation/xen

I created xen.patch with your code.

Code:
cd /usr/portage/app-emulation/xen
ebuild xen-4.8.2-r2.ebuild clean prepare

I was on gcc-6.4.0. I changed back to systemd, removed dantrell-gnome-3.26 and switched to profile 17, emerged -e @world, 300 emerge fails and 5 days later suddenly xen emerged...

After

Code:
emerge --verbose --ask --update --newuse --deep --with-bdeps=y --complete-graph=y @world
emerge -e @world

xen fails to emerge again. There seems to be a bug.

Hello World,

I made:

Code:
emaint sync --auto
eix-sync
eix-update
layman -S
emerge --verbose --ask --update --newuse --deep --with-bdeps=y --complete-graph=y @world
perl-cleaner --reallyall -- -av
emerge -av --depclean
revdep-rebuild -v -- --ask
eclean-dist -d
dispatch-conf
glsa-check -t all
glsa-check -f all
glsa-check -vp affected
eix-test-obsolete
emaint --check all
eix-update

There is now another emerge error message:

https://gist.github.com/anonymous/d5148a6067fd7d448983b87d84459f77

But xen-tools has an error too.

https://gist.github.com/anonymous/5c86f2aa5687df55c2a44ade811386f0

[Moderator edit: added [code] tags to preserve output layout. -Hu]

Waterdevil,

I'm not a Xen user but the error is here.

I don't know what to do about that. Search gentoo bugs and upstream bugs as a start.

[Xen-devel] [BUG] Xen-4.8.0 efi/buildid.o: file not recognized/Ambiguous is worth a read. It hints at some things you might try.

In xen-tools the error is
Code:
build.py...
: error 7000: Failed to execute command
   make tbuild [/var/tmp/portage/app-emulation/xen-tools-4.8.2-r3/work/xen-4.8.2/tools/firmware/ovmf-dir-remote/Build/OvmfX64/RELEASE_GCC44/X64/OvmfPkg/AcpiTables/AcpiTables]

- Failed -
Build end time: 18:44:55, Dec.11 2017

Build xen-tools until it fails, then try to execute the failed command by hand. You might get a more informative error message.

I switched off flask and ovmf and it emerges.

So maybe it's no bug or only with these flags.

I need ovmf, so I have to research further.

As variation now xen doesn't emerge again with a...

Waterdevil,

That's the binutils bug I pointed you to earlier.

Try a different binutils. Binutils is slotted. Use eselect binutils to choose the one to use.
You should the the most recent one if you can.

You may need to install another version.
Code:
$ eix binutils
I] sys-devel/binutils
     Available versions:
     (2.25.1) [M]2.25.1-r1{tbz2}
     (2.26.1) [M]2.26.1{tbz2}
     (2.27) [M](~)2.27-r1
     (2.28.1) 2.28.1{tbz2}
     (2.29.1) 2.29.1-r1{tbz2}
are in the tree.
The first three are masked for security issues, so don't use any of those any more than you need to.

Waterdevil,

That's OK, I aim to help you learn to fish.
That means that I pitch help so you have to work for it and sometimes I get it wrong and pitch it out of your reach.

Don't forget to switch your binutils back.

I seem to be having the same issue (efi/buildid.o: file not recognized: File format is ambiguous) here, when attempting to emerge app-emulation/xen-4.9.1-r1

Things I have tried:
  • Letting my emerge update finish all other packages, updating config files, eselecting latest binutils, etc.
  • Processing presserved libs (emerge @preserved-rebuild)
  • Downgrading binutils and binutils-libs to the 2.28.1 version that worked for Waterdevil above (including eselecting the 2.28.1 version after emerging both packages to the old version, and even recompiling both packages after selecting the old version)
  • revdep-rebuild on binutils libraries (libbfd.so, libopcodes.so, and version-specific copies of both of those. Nothing outside of binutils and cairo is dependent on them, according to revdep-rebuild)
  • Selecting latest gcc and going through the full gcc update process with revdep-rebuild (had to mask xen packages for that to complete, then unmask them and try to emerge them)
  • adding Multitarget to binutils-libs use flags (since xen requires multitarget for binutils, I figured this was worth a shot)
  • Emerging the older version of xen (4.8.2-r2. Fails with same error. And since somehow xen-tools-4.9.1 has emerged successfully, and libvirt updated to a version that requires 4.9, I can't try anymore)

Emerge --info:

Hi araemo,

try to emerge binutils-2.28.1 or binutils-2.27-r1.
then eselect binutils list, eselect binutils set {number from list}
then emerge xen again.
After that eselect the newest again.

regards

I'll be damned, 2.27-r1 worked. So, did a patch not get kept forward? What's going on here?

Edit:
Depclean got rid of binutils 2.28.1 and 2.27-r1 on me (leaving only 2.29.1), and I tried to emerge xen again, same failure.
I emerged binutils 2.27-r1 and eselected it, and xen merges.
I emerged binutils 2.28.1 and eselected it, and xen fails.

I had the same problem. Couldn't solve this with any available binutils slot, so I just gave up and forced the object file format (Gist backup here):

Code:

diff --git a/xen/arch/x86/Makefile b/xen/arch/x86/Makefile
index b5cb5e3..812667c 100644

Gentoo patch for a Xen build failure with the following error:
efi/buildid.o: file not recognized: File format is ambiguous
    efi/buildid.o: matching formats: coff-x86-64 pe-x86-64

Tested with
    app-emulation/xen-4.9.1-r1 USE=efi
    binutils: x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-2.28.1
    profile: default/linux/amd64/17.0/hardened

Write this patch to
    /etc/portage/patches/app-emulation/xen-4.9.1-r1/000-binutils-file-format.patch
and emerge xen.

Not sure if this should be sent upstream (the only other bug report for this I found was Gentoo as well), but works for me.

UPDATE: looks like someone else has already written the exact same patch half a year ago :D

I ran into this very problem back in December 2016, I got around it by compiling my own bin untils.

I've come back to this problem during an upgrade and have logged Gentoo Bug 649048 that goes to the heart of the matter:
Code:
efi/buildid.o: file not recognized: File format is ambiguous
efi/buildid.o: matching formats: coff-x86-64 pe-x86-64

Well, we're still running into this problem as of August 3rd, 2018. Building upon this thread, here's how to apply a quick workaround that still seems to work for app-emulation/xen-4.9.2
Code:
mkdir -p /etc/portage/patches/app-emulation/xen-4.9.2
wget https://gist.github.com/bacondropped/aec1125bc42affb57bd80a11494c6091/raw/17319d9410e2b172280169abd53e2acafe3606c9/000-binutils-file-format.patch -O /etc/portage/patches/app-emulation/xen-4.9.2/000-binutils-file-format.patch
emerge app-emulation/xen

Here is where the matter was left off on upstream, and I haven't seen any updates since:
https://www.mail-archive.com/search?l=xen-devel@lists.xen.org&q=subject:%22Re%5C%3A+%5C%5BXen%5C-devel%5C%5D+%5C%5BBUG%5C%5D+Xen%5C-4.8.0+efi%5C%2Fbuildid.o%5C%3A+file+not+recognized%5C%2FAmbiguous%22&o=newest&f=1
