Hi,

I'm totally new to video/audio streaming so please bear with me.

My goal is to install an HDMI capture card in my Gentoo server, and stream what's coming in through that device over the web so that comon web browsers such as Firefox can view the live video&audio stream ("live", although I don't care if there's a big delay due to transcoding - noone will notice).

I read that software such as VLC and ffmpeg can do streaming, but it is unclear to me which is more appropriate when the goal is to have multiple HTTP clients trying to view a single stream.

Also, I'm not sure how a browser such as Firefox can view a live stream. Is there such a thing as an http:// stream that can be viewed by this browser without any special add-ons? I tried streaming my desktop with VLC via HTTP, but a Firefox client could only download a small binary file. If I try streaming with rtmp in VLC, I require using VLC as an "rtmp client", or I need to have some kind of RTMP add-on, RTMP javascript client in the browser (video.js?). Even when streaming with VLC and HTTP, most examples out there suggest using vlc as a client to connect to the HTTP live stream.

Anyone have a similar setup?

ffmpeg has an ffserver program that can serve VP8 over HTTP, but it's unreliable, low quality and doesn't have documentation or good error messages. You'd waste hours trying to get it working.

I use nginx + obs-studio for streaming. The server side takes some setup but should do all of what you want; it supports RTMP, HLS, HTTPS, and custom ffmpeg transcoding. The delay is pretty good too - I've had it as low as 2 seconds round trip over the internet.
