Hi, have you guys ever considered signing up for Patreon ( https://www.patreon.com ) and accepting donations through them?

I like to sign up with them and support various things. I usually just give $1 or $2 a month but I keep it going as long as my heart is still ticking. ;) I'd love to do the same for Gentoo as the way I see it, it would be paying for the infrastructure that I use here. Individually the donations might not be much but if you get hundreds or thousands of people to each give a small amount it can be rather significant and add up.

Patreon seems more suitable for individual developers. That way, you could make sure software you use stays maintained.

The Gentoo foundation already accepts donations. They might have problems coordinating thousands of $1 donations, I suppose, but 10% in fees is pretty steep.

Patreon is not safe. Years ago they've had a major breach where millions of userdata have been stolen.
I figure things haven't changed much.

Gentoo supports periodic donations via PayPal. It's right there on the Gentoo Donate page. Not sure why we would need another mechanism. In the past I've made the occasional donation but I am now signed up for a monthly contribution.

Isn't it only $10 a month and up though?

I read about that. Sadly though I think that can happen with almost anyone.

I thought it was 5% that they charged?

It just seems to me that if you get hundreds or thousands of donations from people donating $1 or $2 each month it would really start to add up quickly. I notice with the Paypal donations the monthly minimum seems to be $10 and the one time donation minimum seems to be $5 (probably because there is some sort of flat rate charge per transaction?). When the minimums are very low I feel people are way more likely to donate. At least that is the way it works for me.

True, for the periodic donation. I've donated as little as $5 through the one-time donation option. $5 every 5 months would be a dollar a month, though.

Several developers have been using flattr for years before Patreon even existed. If you really want to donate then there's nothing stopping you.

you could also send me all donations for 0 fee, and i will handle the redistribution at my charge.
i'm also taking donations for catastrophe, disease, female cause...

ps: for black friday, for any donation made, i'll get your wife back in less than 7 days!
you will also get the stone of luck, that will provide you luck for all your life! (only for first 10000 customers, my garden doesn't have too many stones)
