Hi experts, mine is a very old gentoo server which I am trying to upgrade. Every time I try emerging ANY package, I get the below error -

Code:
emerge -av www-client/google-chrome
!!! Invalid news item: /usr/portage/metadata/news/2017-07-16-systemd-rootprefix/2017-07-16-systemd-rootprefix.en.txt

 * IMPORTANT: 29 news items need reading for repository 'gentoo'.
 * Use eselect news to read news items.

 * IMPORTANT: 4 config files in '/etc/portage' need updating.
 * See the CONFIGURATION FILES section of the emerge

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

- www-client/google-chrome-62.0.3202.94::gentoo (masked by: EAPI 6)

The current version of portage supports EAPI '5'. You must upgrade to a
newer version of portage before EAPI masked packages can be installed.
For more information, see the MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge
man page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

So, I tried upgrading the portage using the below command -

Code:
home # emerge --ask --verbose --oneshot sys-apps/portage

But that fails too. Python version installed is 3.3 as you can see from the below o/p.
Code:
home # eselect python list
Available Python interpreters:
  [1]   python2.6
  [2]   python2.7
  [3]   python3.2
  [4]   python3.3 *

I also tried disabling xattr under /etc/portage/make.conf, but no go.
vim /etc/portage/make.conf
Code:
USE="-xattr mmx mmxext nptl nptlonly smp sse sse2 sse3 ssse3 sse4 threads truetype unicode"

I am completely out of ideas as to how to get over this. Appreciate all your help and thanks in advance.
Code:

Go back in time to when it was less old. Upgrade it then. Leave a note for yourself to find today reminding you to go back in time to then so that you don't create a paradox by not going back.
