Hey guys,
I want to build myself a new computer around the lucious AMD Threadripper 1950X cpu with Gentoo Linux as my main OS. Due to past experiences however, I have found that somewhat newer gpu's tend to give linux users a rough time and I was wondering if any of you have some suggestions regarding hardware components At the moment my budget is around 2000 euro's and I don't intend to use it for gaming whatsoever. Any help would be much appreciated! |

I run Kaby Lake and have no problems whatsoever. There is AMD thread somewhere in these forums, you need to use fairly new GCC for it, I believe. And a recent kernel indeed. This "Linux has trouble with new hardware" comes from Debian users and alike, they still run 3.x kernel and wonder why developers didn't include support for future hardware. _________________ My Gentoo installation notes.

oh man Threadripper 1950X + Gentoo sounds like a match made in heaven
check out the Noctua TR Coolers like NH-U14S TR4-SP3
I wonder if quad channel RAM provides significant differences in compile times |

For ordinary desktop use, why not stick with tried-and-true hardware and avoid the pain and the extra heat produced by bleeding edge GPU? Honestly, my combo desktop/server has an NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS and the screens are quicker than a blink. Just saying. _________________ Andy Figueroa
