Venezuelans Throng Grocery Stores Under Military Protection

Quote:
Shoppers thronged grocery stores across Caracas today as deepening shortages led the government to put Venezuela’s food distribution under military protection.

Long lines, some stretching for blocks, formed outside grocery stores in the South American country’s capital as citizens search for scarce basic items such as detergent and chicken.

“I’ve visited six stores already today looking for detergent -- I can’t find it anywhere,” said Lisbeth Elsa, a 27-year-old janitor, waiting in line outside a supermarket in eastern Caracas. “We’re wearing our dirty clothes again because we can’t find it. At this point I’ll buy whatever I can find.”

A dearth of foreign currency exacerbated by collapsing oil prices has led to shortages of imports from toilet paper to car batteries, and helped push annual inflation to 64 percent in November. The lines will persist as long as price controls remain in place, Luis Vicente Leon, director of Caracas-based polling firm Datanalisis, said today in a telephone interview.

Government officials met with representatives from supermarket chains today to guarantee supplies, state news agency AVN reported. Interior Minister Carmen Melendez said yesterday that security forces would be sent to food stores and distribution centers to protect shoppers.

"Government officials met with representatives from supermarket chains today to guarantee supplies"

Yeah, good luck with that.

Gov is good, Gov is great. Let us thank Gov for our food. By Gov's hands we all are fed. Give us, Lords, our Daily Bread.

Venezuelan shortages, long lines spark violence, arrests

Quote:
At least a dozen protesters arrested in Venezuela remained in jail on Monday and masked assailants burned a bus overnight amid scattered unrest over swelling lines for basic goods, activists said.

Police rounded up 16 people for protesting in front of stores over the weekend, according to the opposition MUD coalition, which said four of them were released shortly after.

Rights group Penal Forum said 18 protesters were still behind bars on Monday. The government did not confirm that.

Venezuela is suffering from chronic shortages of goods ranging from diapers to flour that have worsened this year because of an ebb in deliveries during Christmas. The scarcity has forced shoppers across Venezuela to line up in front of stores before dawn.

The MUD also accused soldiers posted outside shops of banning photos of the lines, which sometimes snake around blocks.

Venezuela just defaulted, moving deeper into crisis

Quote:
Venezuela, a nation spiraling into a humanitarian crisis, has missed a debt payment. It could soon face grim consequences.

The South American country defaulted on its debt, according to a statement issued Monday night by S&P Global Ratings. The agency said the 30-day grace period had expired for a payment that was due in October.

A debt default risks setting off a dangerous series of events that could exacerbate Venezuela's food and medical shortages.
If enough holders of a particular bond demand full and immediate repayment, it can prompt investors across all Venezuelan bonds to demand the same thing. Since Venezuela doesn't have the money to pay all its bondholders right now, investors would then be entitled to seize the country's assets -- primarily barrels of oil -- outside its borders.

Socialism is retarded.

The little kid in a communist country (originally the Union of Fewer and Fewer States):

Kid: Grandpa, what is a line?
Grandpa: When I was a kid we would stand in a line to get meat.
Kid: Oh.
Kid: ...
kid: Grandpa, what is "meat?"
