could it be a xinit issue?
There is a bug report on this issue. Please read it before updating and rebooting.
https://bugs.gentoo.org/634706

just guessing
check /etc/conf.d/xdm to see if you have sddm as the display manager.

I did the workaround suggested there, but the issue persists. While I'd really like to get to the bottom of this, if I can't get my system up and running in a day, I'll just reinstall.

I think a new install won't help.

Auth: sddm-helper exited with 11

probably means sddm-helper segfaulting, get more info from syslogs about that.
Taking into account that sddm uses QtQuick, this might be of relevance:
https://blog.martin-graesslin.com/blog/2017/08/warning-nvidia-driver-384-69-seems-to-be-broken-with-qtquick/

So there are some steps you can try to circumvent this:
- upgrade sddm
- downgrade sddm
- downgrade nvidia driver
- switch to nouveau

I tried my best to fix this, I really did, but alas, the computer has me beat. You win this one, you piece of silicon. A new install worked wonders and I've got my setup back the way I want it-hooray for backups!

To anyone who stumbles on the post far in the future:

God help you. o7

I only want to say that I had similar issues with it but in the last month or two it magically started working again. As a workaround I ended up just booting to CLI and envoking kdm manually (startkde).

I have no idea what fixed it as now I typically update every 2-3 weeks and reboot about once a month.

@xal,

Speaking as a fellow sddm user... IMHO sddm can die in a fire... 8O

It probably would have been easier to update your Nvidia driver to the 387.xx branch and SDDM to 0.16.
An OS reinstall is so "Linux Mint"...
