Hello.

This morning, I updated my world and didn't pay attention to the updates. I came back to my computer later and rebooted it to apply the new changes to the new plasma version. Instead of loading into Plasma I was presented with the terminal. So I used startx, but all I get is a black screen that just sits there; it looks like it is going to load into the login screen but doesn't. So I F1 out of it to get back to the terminal. There is some sort of message about GTK gboolean failing and xclock not found with a list of twm warning font for charset lacking, then ctrl+c to kill the process.
However, if I
Code:
$sudo startx
I get plasma to work. I just can not get my reg user account to load Plasma.
I am using openrc. All of my qt are the same versions with
Code:
dev-qt/*
in my package.keywords.
It seems to be a common theme with this update to Plasma-5.11.1 with log in issues from what I have seen on the forums.
I have gone over all the posts pertaining to Plasma not loading. Sadly none of the fixes worked for me. I even updated to xinit-1.3.4-r3.
Sadly I still have to use the root version to use my computer.

I would greatly appreciate the help.

Thanks

With plasma 5 I've found that sddm never worked for me, but I have had success with lightdm. However some of my boxes just cycle right through a plasma session because of whatever weirdness is going on with user's tmp setup, dbus, locks whatever. For those boxes I've just created an ~.xinitrc and put a /usr/bin/startkde in it. That always seems to work getting plasma to make a go a restoring my desktop from a virtual console where I have logged in as me.

Never have a problem with a lightdm session starting plasma on a new install with a minimal stage3 from the last year or so.

Thanks for the reply vaxbrat.

I tried what you suggested and put /usr/bin/startkde in my /.xinitrc and there was no change.
Which makes me to wonder that it isn't sddm that is causing the issue, because I can start plasma as root. So I don't know. Xorg and my Nvidia had an update as well, so I wonder if that some how could be causing issues.

When I start up in the cmd startx does not fail it just gets stuck on the black screen, like it is about to login. I have to kill the session for it to stop.

I updated my nvidia drivers to the newest version 387.12.
uname -a
Code:
Linux rbear 4.9.8-gentoo #1 SMP Thu Apr 20 20:24:13 PDT 2017 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-5820K CPU @ 3.30GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

I have changed the /etc/X11/startDM.sh to
Code:
EXEC="$(/lib/rc/bin/get_options service)"
NAME="$(/lib/rc/bin/get_options name)"
PIDFILE="$(/lib/rc/bin/get_options pidfile)"
START_STOP_ARGS="$(/lib/rc/bin/get_options start_stop_args)"
and rebooted and my desktop is failing to load.

When I do not run sudo startx, this is the error that is showing up when I ctrl+alt F1
Code:
Gtk message : (for origin information, set GTK_DeBUG): failed to retrieve property 'gtk-primary-button-warps-slder' of type 'gboolean' from rc file value "((GString*) 0x15af600)" of type 'gboolean'
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc : line 59: xclock : command not found
twm: warning: font for charset JISX0200.1983-0 is lacking
...

Hopefully this gives someone a clue to what might be wrong.

Is there a way to show what the last etc-update file that was changed?
I remember doing a etc-update but I can not remember what it was before I started having issues. That update might be my issue but I have no idea what it was now.

Thanks

Thank you for the reply bdouxx.

You sir a a scholar and a gentleman. :)

That fixed my issue of not being able to load straight into Plasma.

However I have no way to change my desktop settings for wallpaper or plasma. I have no right click menu to control the settings. I will try to log out and back in. But is there something that I am missing to fix it?
Edit: after reboot I have a wallpaper again but still no way to change it. It was working when I was logged into root.

Thanks again
