PostPosted: Mon Oct 16, 2017 8:15 pm    Post subject: Cannot start KDE *with startx( Reply with quote

Hello everyone

when I run startx, KDE (plasma without systemd) appears to go up, it even gets to show the waiting symbols of a starting KDE, but then returns to the console and stalls, till I press ctrl-c. Initially I suspeted a problem with baloo, because of several errors explaining that there were not enough space on a device to add watchers. I increased the max_user_watchers, those erros disappearred, but KDE does not start either. I have to confess that I do not know where to look for a solution. Can someone give me a hint?

A bit more context: I used to rely on sddm for the whole thing, but a few days ago it stoped working. So I decided to use startx instead. It worked for a couple of days, very well indeed. Not anymore.

My .xinitrc reads:

Code:
!/bin/sh
[[ -f ~/.Xresources ]] && xrdb -merge -I$HOME ~/.Xresources
xset b off
exec startkde

When I run startx I get the following output on the console:

Code:
hostname: Unbekannter Rechner
xauth:  file /home/pablo/.serverauth.5437 does not exist

Hello

reading the docs for the n-th time I found that the .xinitrc should include the line:

Code:
#!/bin/sh
exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch --sh-syntax --exit-with-session startkde

And then, it works.

Regards,
p.
