Evening all!

Not sure if anyone else has come across this, but I did a google search and came up empty. I'm trying to install the most recent nvidia drivers for a geforce 210. When I looked on nvidia's website it did not show support for my card. I have to go all the way back to nvidia-drivers-340-102.r2 to find support on the nvidia website. My question is am I going to have to go back to nouveau, or will the most current driver work? Is the nvidia website accurate?

I forgot to mention that the nvidia 340 drivers are not supported past kernel 4.10

I looked at ebuild and did not see this restriction. Did I miss something?

I see now. No, the current driver will not work. You have to switch no nouveau or find the patch, it may be on nVidia forums.

Since I've never used a patch before, I went with just using the nouveau drivers. The box I am working on right now is the HTPC in my bedroom, which is a very similar to the HTPC in my son's bedroom. I couldn't get HDMi to work with fluxbox (plus I broke it) I decided to reinstall Gentoo with KDE as my DE. If this doesn't work I might be back trying to figure out how to get the system patched. Thanks for the input guys!

You do not need a WM/DM for HDMI, I use my Kodi box running Kodi directly on Xorg. HDMI needs kernel drivers and Xorg drivers, window manager or desktop environment are net involved in any way.

I am somewhat aware that my DE has nothing to do with the HDMI sound, but I tried EVERYTHING I could find on google, forums, etc to get it going. The only thing I could think of at this point was using KDE, photon, kmix, etc. I'm also going to try using pulseaudio instead of ALSA. Once I get it figured out with KDE I might switch back to Fluxbox, but at this point I need to get it figured out with a more GUI based DE, I'm hoping this will make it much easier.

PulseAudio will not do any miracles, it is just a parasite layer between ALSA and user application. If your kernel ALSA is not configured properly for HDMI then there will be no HDMI sound, PulseAudio or not.

Then I invite you to visit this thread, and please try and give your input/help. My son's HTPC has Gentoo/Fluxbox/Alsa, and almost an identical box as the one in my bedroom, if you can think of something that would work and we haven't tried please let me know.

You can test HDMI audio by sending something to it, there is no need to set it default. Below is how I send sound to my TV set playing a movie with MPV, while the soundcard on my motherboard is the default output for all aplications.
Code:
mpv --audio-device=alsa/hdmi:CARD=PCH,DEV=1

You need to make sure nouveau supports HDMI audio with your chipset. I have one box here with nVidia ION, only blob can handle the HDMI sound on this one.

Well, I can honestly say this card has been an absolute nightmare dating all the way back to 2011. One other thing I did not mention is that yesterday before I attempted this install, I did install Kubuntu and the sound WAS working, and the only 2 differences was nvidia drivers and pulseaudio. I copied the pulseaudio config and I'll use that, if it does not work then for sure it's the drivers. I'll update you once this install is complete.

So after a successful installation of Gentoo, KDE & Pulse Audio, I was able to get sound from my HDMI card. Thanks for all your help and input Jaglover!
