I thought I posted this one, but apparently not.

A while back I watched Manchester by the Sea. Really good.

More recently I watched Gone Baby Gone, which was also really good. Although Casey Affleck's characters were pretty similar, he definitely appears to be much better at the craft than Ben.

Oh, I watched Alien Covenant yesterday (available on Amazon for rent).

Visuals, effects and acting are all good but the movie raised more questions than it answered and it kinda muddled everything.

Not sure if I liked it.

There were teenage angsty moments.

Comrade Detective

New mini-series on Amazon Prime.

It just takes the piss out of Soviet era Romania.

In the thick of 1980's Cold War hysteria, the Romanian government created the country's most popular and longest-running series, Comrade Detective, a sleek and gritty police show that not only entertained its citizens but also promoted Communist ideals and inspired a deep nationalism. The action-packed and blood-soaked first season finds Detectives Gregor Anghel and Joseph Baciu investigating the murder of fellow officer Nikita Ionescu and, in the process, unraveling a subversive plot to destroy their country that is fueled by-what else-but the greatest enemy: Capitalism.

Quote:
Was it an inside job?

Impossible, there are no corrupt police in Romania.

@notageek:

I think raising questions is part of his goal. I'll probably wait for it to not cost extra.

@muso:

But is it any good? I read the description a while back and didn't think it seemed likely to be watchable for long.

I quite like it. But I was turned onto the show by my friend's wife, who had defected from communist Romania when she was a teenager. She was describing all of the accuracies of the show, so I went into it with a better understanding than say the average Prime viewer.

It's not for everyone... but if you've been a student of the insanity of communist countries then I'd say you'll enjoy it.

Yeah, I know he's making two more movies and it was unashamed "continued in next episode" kind of thing.

Ugh. Too much stuff in my queue. If it's good enough for a defector, I'll watch at least an episode or two.

I don't think he has anything useful left, and he's just in it for the money.

Holy crap, I didn't know it was also a sequel to Spaceballs. I swear that was a bulldozer in space at ~1m3s.

I was watching it. I think it's a faux defector story.

It is out in the wild now? Hmm. Not in NK though...as far as I know. It must be soon though. I find a lot of good things pouring out lately.

Dunkirk and lots and lots of others I cannot recollect right now!

Trainspotting 1 isn't even out in North Korea ...

The Mechanic. The real, 1972 version. I never did care for how it ended in Italy, but the overall ending was fine.

Vampire in Brooklyn

It isn't a "good," vampire movie, but it was still entertaining. Seemed a bit tongue-in-cheek. Not a parody, but neither were they trying to be the definitive vampire movie.

Leaving Prime near the end of the month if you want to catch it for "free."

The Dark Tower

It was fun and maybe a little bit too cheese for what I was expecting but I did enjoy it.

What Happened to Monday

Interesting movie. Noomi Rapace did an excellent job playing 7 different characters.

Green Dragon

Excellent. Patrick Swayze and Forest Whitaker. They're really side characters. It's about Vietnamese refugees arriving in the US at Camp Pendleton toward the end of the war.

Oh, FYI, on Prime there were no subtitles in the movie itself. You can turn on Amazon's, but then it also subtitles English as well. I don't know Vietnamese, so it was better than none.

I always watch with subtitles because it's easier for my wife to understand various English accents with subtitles. So, no problem here.

It makes watching things with Scottish or Irish actors much easier to understand at first... then familiarity with the accent kicks in after a while.

lol

I generally find subtitles distracting. Though I too have turned them on from time to time when listening to the Crown's subjects.

I used to, but after 17 years of marriage to a Japanese woman, it's a normal part of life for me.
