Hello everyone, I'm still kinda new to gentoo and I was planning to upgrade my llvm to 4.0 or better to reap the performance benefits(and have the portage slot advantage). But I seem to have reached an impass.
Code: | Calculating dependencies... done!

Laachax,
Your emerge output shows that you are mixing the stable and testing branches.
Why do you need a testing llvm?
Once you mix things like this, its up to you to find a set of packages that work. You keyword once package and that may have dependencies that need to be keyworded and those packages in turn ... and so on.
Which brings us back to what do you want to do?
llvm is not something you normally install deliberately. It's pulled in as a dependency of something.
Further, llvm is only slotted from version 4 onwards.
Code: | $ equery d llvm
* These packages depend on llvm:
media-libs/mesa-9999 (vulkan ? >=sys-devel/llvm-3.9.0[abi_x86_32(-)?,abi_x86_64(-)?,abi_x86_x32(-)?,abi_mips_n32(-)?,abi_mips_n64(-)?,abi_mips_o32(-)?,abi_ppc_32(-)?,abi_ppc_64(-)?,abi_s390_32(-)?,abi_s390_64(-)?])
(>=sys-devel/llvm-3.6.0[abi_x86_32(-)?,abi_x86_64(-)?,abi_x86_x32(-)?,abi_mips_n32(-)?,abi_mips_n64(-)?,abi_mips_o32(-)?,abi_ppc_32(-)?,abi_ppc_64(-)?,abi_s390_32(-)?,abi_s390_64(-)?])
(video_cards_radeonsi ? sys-devel/llvm[llvm_targets_AMDGPU])
(video_cards_radeonsi ? sys-devel/llvm[video_cards_radeon])
(opencl ? >=sys-devel/llvm-3.6.0[abi_x86_32(-)?,abi_x86_64(-)?,abi_x86_x32(-)?,abi_mips_n32(-)?,abi_mips_n64(-)?,abi_mips_o32(-)?,abi_ppc_32(-)?,abi_ppc_64(-)?,abi_s390_32(-)?,abi_s390_64(-)?])
sys-devel/llvm-4.0.1 (>=sys-devel/llvm-3.5) |
It appears that mesa-9999 is the only package I have that depends on llvm.
ebuilds with version numbers of 9999 and 99999999 point to the live code in the upstream repository. At any time, it may not build and if it builds, it may not work.
You presently have media-libs/mesa-17.1.5, which is the latest testing mesa.
I recommend you don't try the live mesa but its your Gentoo. If it breaks, Xorg won't work but as long as you are confident of fixing it without a GUI, its harmless.
You learn more when it breaks :) _________________ Regards,

I'm looking to be able to use the slots and some nice performance upgrades(Since I have fairly new mesa and use AMDGPU).
I was considering doing mesa-9999 as well, I don't mind it randomly exploding x) |

Laachax,
Go for it then.
You might want to make friends with quickpkg and emerge -K before you start.
That will make backing out easier. _________________ Regards,

quickpkg mesa and llvm because they will be replaced.
mesa-9999 is not keyworded at all, so add Code: | =media-libs/mesa-9999 ** | to package.accept_keywords.
should offer to update mesa, which in turn will pull in llvm-4.x
You may need to keyword other things .. emerge will tell you.
Homework,
What does ** mean in package.accept_keywords?
Why emerge -1... ? _________________ Regards,

** means use the latest visible package, which is 9999 right?
-1 is a one shot so it's not in the @world, thus it can avoid some things?
When I do it doesn't pull in llvm 4. Should I do that anyways then remove llvm3 and grab llvm4, then finally do a non-oneshot to get mesa-9999 compiled with llvm4? |

Laachax,
** matches any keyword. Including none at all, which is how all the live ebuilds are keyworded. They are invisible until you do the **
-1, --oneshot indeed keeps things out of world.
mesa is a dependency of either Xorg or some video drivers.
llvm is a dependency of mesa, so nome of what you are doing needs to be listed in world.
It won't matter right now but when dependencies change, things listed in world will be kept, even if they are not needed.
Post the output of and _________________ Regards,

Laachax,
wayland should be a global USE flag.
You either want wayland or you don't. Its rather like Xorg ... you want it all or you want none of it.
You have wayland set on something in package.use
To build mesa with wayland support you need the testing dev-libs/wayland-protocols.
Don't do what portage suggests. The[code =dev-libs/wayland-protocols-1.9 ~amd64 [/code]will lock you to a version, that will store up problems for later.
Code: | dev-libs/wayland-protocols ~amd64 | lets you upgrade to any testing version.
I misread the mesa ebuild. The llvm fragment is
Code: | llvm? (
video_cards_radeonsi? (
virtual/libelf:0=[${MULTILIB_USEDEP}]
vulkan? ( >=sys-devel/llvm-3.9.0:=[${MULTILIB_USEDEP}] )
)
video_cards_r600? (
virtual/libelf:0=[${MULTILIB_USEDEP}]
)
video_cards_radeon? (
virtual/libelf:0=[${MULTILIB_USEDEP}]
)
>=sys-devel/llvm-3.6.0:=[${MULTILIB_USEDEP}]
)
| so llvm-4 .x is not forced at all. >=sys-devel/llvm-3.9.0 will do.
This should mean that testing mesa will do but if you don't mind it exploding ...
Fix the wayland USE
emerge -1 llvm
emerge -1 mesa to use the new llvm.
Portage will then want you to do emerge @preserved-rebuild the radeon and radeonsi drivers using the new mesa,
-- edit --
Code: | MAKEOPTS="-j41 -l4" | That's some compile farm you have there.
Does it ever run more than 4 make jobs? _________________ Regards,

Wow, I totally thought I had wayland in my make.conf. Thanks for catching that for me, as I was planning on checking out wayland soon and that certainly would have been a rude awakening!
Now that I'm waiting on that to compile I checked emerge -p1 llvm and it still gets blocked by the llvm3.9 my system has, doing -pvc leads me to believe I can't remove it without removing mesa.

I have a server with a gentoo vm and a few computers in my house are getting converted over to gentoo so I threw distcc on them. It's like the jbod of compiling. If you need to configure more than four jobs then no it doesn't, I'll have to look into that.
This wayland compile will take a while x)
edit; yep llvm3 is still blocking installing llvm 4. But luckily I just remembered that you can do -C and reinstall it again. I'm dumb, thanks for the help and insight! |
