I fixed all the errors by moving all of it's .so files to /usr/lib32, and now I don't know what to do...
I've set launch options, disabled the Steam overlay, and reset Steam, but nothing seems to work. Does anyone know what to do?

If you moved libraries that came with the game in it's install directory to your system directory, you shouldn't have done that. I would recommend that you undo it (move the libraries back). If you overwrote any system libraries you should reinstall them. Verifying the game installation is also a good idea. Then please tell us about the errors you had when you tried to run it. |

In general, you can launch games from cmdline by either running it from the directory, e.g. cd .MY/GAME/DIR; ./game, or adding a library path before running.

Civ5 however doesn't launch for me atleast unless run from steam. If you are having issues you are trying to troubleshoot, you can launch the game from steam, and use/tmp/dumps/steam_stdout.txt to read errors from the game. There are game specific logs too, and their location varies, but Civ5 has them in .local/Aspyr/Sid\ Meier\'s\ Civilization\ 5/Logs/
If you want to just launch the game from cmdline, you should be able to do it with "steam steam://rungameid/8930". This doesn't give you useful output for debugging, you still need to use logs for that.
If you want to lauch Civ5 from cmdline directly without steam , you can propably make it work by lauching it from steam, getting it's process number, and looking it's environment and possibly other parameters in /proc/1234/* and trying what it needs to make it run. You most likely will still need to have steam running. |

Civ5 requires 32-bit graphics drivers, and I think Steam does too. |

I think you got the wrong file name. Also, happysmash27_stdout.txt just looks like the log that appears when I run in the terminal. Maybe you can get something from it? I couldn't find anything that looked useful.
Also, disabling the game overlay doesn't seem to do anything...

Do any other games start? There seems to be an open issue with that same output, but there isn't any info.

Just to be sure, what filesystem are you using? Civ5 isn't giving much info why it doesn't work.
When you first start Civ5 from steam, it gives a license pop-up window. Do you recall if you ever got it?
With AMD open source drivers you should have 32-bit drivers, if you have abi_x86_32 enabled for mesa. Enabling it globally will use a little more space and have a bit longer compile times, but will save a lot of trouble in the future. In case you want to try it, add ABI_X86="64 32" to make.conf and run world update.
You should try the usual workarounds for steam runtime, start it with STEAM_RUNTIME=0 and STEAM_RUNTIME_PREFER_HOST_LIBRARIES=0 both on different runs. First one disables steam runtime alltogether, and later forces it over system libraries.
Also please make sure, that you have all libraries that steam and civ5 requires installed. While steam runtime provides some, mixing them with system libraries does sometimes bring issues. Missing libraries should show then you run steam with runtime diabled. |

on another run. I think STEAM_RUNTIME=0 will give same restults as using them both, but it's worth the shot.

Well, steam includes all required libraries from Ubuntu. It just defaults to using system libraries instead. Running with STEAM_RUNTIME_PREFER_HOST_LIBRARIES=0 steam sets steam to use the included libraries (steam runtime) instead basicly giving you a sort of ubuntu base system.

because standard C++ library shipped with gcc causes ABI breakages, when different versions of gcc is mixed. Civ5 also needs atleast sys-libs/libcxxrt. Civ5 provides its own versions of C++ libraries in it's installation folder, so removing them from steam runtime might not be enough. You might need to remove them from Civ5 installation folder too, or force system libraries over them with LD_PRELOAD in steam launch options for the game.
Also the filesystem can brake games. Just to rule it out, can you tell which filesystem steam and it's library is running on? If you have no idea what I'm talking about, will tell it. |
