I've compiled 1.4 on my system, complete with fluxbox and gnome2. I'm also using the gentoo-sources kernel (the one that is currently masked) and my system is very snappy. I went fairly easy on the compiler flags, too, im surprised to have this much of a difference (i was coming from gcc 2.95 with default flags and vanilla kernel).

Im compiling mozilla 1.1 from source as there isnt an ebuild. I picked my way through the ebuild for 1.1beta and pulled out a lot of ./configure options that would have been used had i emerged it, and am using those on the release. Its still compiling. Unfortunately, it takes a while...

Problem. I am trying to put the 1.4 tarball on my IBM T22 lappy. Once I get to the bootstrap process I get this error:
Code:

(none) portage # scripts/bootstrap.sh
!!! Error: /usr/portage/profiles/default-x86-2.0 does not exist. Exiting.

and I can't go any further.
Any help?

Thanks,
Andrew

edit: I changed the soft link from /usr/make.profile to the /usr/portage/profiles/default-x86-1.4 did anyone else have to do this?
Am I wierd?
It is bootstrapping, but not sure if it will work..... :?

Well, that's correct now, since they have just removed the default-x86-2.0 profile from portage. It's doubtful there are any great changes, so you should be fine just using the newer one.

1.4 is newer than 2.0? Just curious, or did I read that wrong?
The bootstrap lasted about 3.5 hours, so i stopped. I may just go with a 1.2 install and then switch over to gcc3.2.
Thanks,
Andrew

the 1.4 profile is working excellent for me thus far, its bootstrapping as march=i686 (compiling for one athlon, one celeron, and several other [unknown] machines).

Heres a question, though: My desktop is compiled with the 2.0 profile. When I next rsync it, will i need to switch it to the 1.4 profile? Will i have any difficulties by doing this???

So does this mean that the 1.4 cd will be out like at the beginning of the week? please?
I am going to try the bootstrap again, it only took about an hour on 1.1a, but I will let it go overnight to let it finish. Hopefully it works for me.

Thanks!
Andrew

No, it only means that the 2.0 profile was deprecated and replaced by the 1.4 profile. ;)

Just out of curiosity: why do you want a new install cd if you already have Gentoo installed?

I have / going to have 4/5 computers all running Gentoo, my desktop is currently a 1.2 install about 2 weeks old, lappy going to be 1.4 after this weekend, K6-2 wants to wait for 1.4 (it told me so) and P166 already has 1.2 on it, G4 PowerMac may want to join the gentoo fun.
They all have their own personalities... I can't help if they like the gentoo install cds. I almost have the install process memorized.....

Oh yea, and I just dropped $28.99 on a Gentoo T-Shirt! yea! I am going to wear that thing for like a week after I get it, boy is it going to smell.....

hehe,
Andrew

edit: I think I need to invest in a KVM switch... or learn how to do remote X real fast. :D

Are we off topic? I can't even tell, it is 1:30 am for me time.
I have a K6-2 board and processor with 128mb ram from the place I worked this summer (free). Have ATI mach64 graphic card (same place, 2 summers ago, free), 45Gig HD (ripped from G4, it wasn't getting enough lovin being nfs server for mp3s), 256 extra MB ram (same silly G4), sound blaster 16 (not sure why, but I may need sound, from current desktop after get sb live), new case (from newegg, not yet ordered, $40), lots of ssh / X tunneling (priceless).
I need more money.

Oh yea, this is going to serve up some RTCW action (see my gentoo clan posting in games section, I don't feel like linking right now ;)), I have no idea what I am typing anymore

Maybe, but in Gentoo Chat it's kind of allowed... ;) Besides, we're talking about 1.4... As soon as the iso comes out, I'll put it into Frankie (good name for it, huh?).
