:) well eudev is back!!!!

others may know this by heart but for those that may run across this thread troubleshooting. I had to re-lookup

downloaded rescue cd
https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/User:Fearedbliss/Installing_Gentoo_Linux_On_ZFS

Code:

zpool import -R /mnt/gentoo mypool

(below is from funtoo wiki)
mount -t proc none proc
mount --rbind /sys sys
mount --rbind /dev dev

chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash

Then from John
Code:

emerge -v --nodeps eudev

John...last requested...
Code:

emerge -1vp openrc |tee /root/installed/john/openrc

 * IMPORTANT: 3 config files in '/etc/portage' need updating.

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies   * See the CONFIGURATION FILES and CONFIGURATION FILES UPDATE TOOLS
 * sections of the emerge man page to learn how to update config files.

but from emerge -auvDN logrotate

NOTE: Use the '--verbose-conflicts' option to display parents omitted above

It may be possible to solve this problem by using package.mask to
prevent one of those packages from being selected. However, it is also
possible that conflicting dependencies exist such that they are
impossible to satisfy simultaneously.  If such a conflict exists in
the dependencies of two different packages, then those packages can
not be installed simultaneously. You may want to try a larger value of
the --backtrack option, such as --backtrack=30, in order to see if
that will solve this conflict automatically.

For more information, see MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge man
page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

Couple of questions.
  1. What logging daemon did you install?
  2. What's the output of
    Code:
    equery list -p opentmpfiles

I didn't give you the top of the output...

Code:

ok I think it may have something to do with the config files?

I usually just use the update on these but this one I removed the last line....

I've added -systemd to USE and I have

Code:

cat /etc/portage/package.mask/systemd
sys-apps/systemd

Your right...it's dbus... I've added use flags via package.use but it doesn't seem to change it on dbus

I've got -systemd in make.conf

also
Code:

# cat /etc/portage/package.use/dbus
sys-apps/dbus -systemd

Code:

# equery uses sys-apps/dbus
[ Legend : U - final flag setting for installation]
[        : I - package is installed with flag     ]
[ Colors : set, unset                             ]
 * Found these USE flags for sys-apps/dbus-1.10.18:
 U I
 + - X            : Add support for X11
 - - debug        : Enable extra debug codepaths, like asserts and extra output. If you want to get meaningful backtraces see https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Project:Quality_Assurance/Backtraces
 - - doc          : Add extra documentation (API, Javadoc, etc). It is recommended to enable per package instead of globally
 - - static-libs  : Build static versions of dynamic libraries as well
 + - systemd      : Build with sys-apps/systemd at_console support
 - - test         : Workaround to pull in packages needed to run with FEATURES=test. Portage-2.1.2 handles this internally, so don't set it in make.conf/package.use anymore
 - - user-session : Enable user-session semantics for session bus under systemd

Why is that not changing?

Trying adding the line "sys-apps/dbus -systemd" to package.use, then report the error message from
"emerge -a1v dbus".

Don't forget the magic incantation ". /etc/profile" after edit.

Do you have a systemd profile selected? "eselect profile list".

Have you installed Gnome?

I had a very hard time putting a stake through systemd's heart, which is why I advocate forking Gentoo.

Double check your make.conf and make sure USE=-systemd is in there properly, it should override make.profile (and make sure that hyphen is there!)...

I'm lost

I just want to point out that if systemd is undesired, disabling the systemd USE flag and/or masking the sys-apps/systemd package is not enough. What you need to do is mask the systemd USE flag:

Config: /etc/portage/profile/use.mask:
systemd

I've got systemd in package.use with -systemd... see last post

I've never had to run /etc/profile in order for changes to take place... I'm wondering if that's just newer because I haven't been on gentoo long

but normally I do equery uses and something is not set...then I add to package.use then equery uses again and it's set ( I don't have much experience in unsetting)..

This time... it didn't unset

I don't have gnome window manager ( I use xmonad ) but

Code:

 # equery depends gnome-common
 * These packages depend on gnome-common:
gnome-base/gnome-vfs-2.24.4-r5 (gnome-base/gnome-common)
media-gfx/gtkimageview-1.6.4 (gnome-base/gnome-common)

my make .conf USE
Code:

USE="bindist acpi bash-completion zsh-completion git hscolour matroska \
     mplayer nas ogg pcre postgres readline qt4 ssl threads \
     vim-syntax vorbis xcomposite truetype corefonts xft fontconfig -systemd

dantrell, I'll look into that.

also
Code:

cat /etc/portage/package.mask/systemd /etc/portage/package.mask/udev
sys-apps/systemd
sys-fs/udev

I had done the systemd one earlier in troubleshooting. I just added the udev

I doubt that does anything at all, except possibly confuse portage.

I don't know why it now seems to insist on systemd... I've had dbus but never systemd

Code:

[U] sys-apps/dbus
     Available versions:  1.10.12^t{tbz2} ~1.10.16-r1^t 1.10.18^t {X debug doc elogind selinux static-libs systemd test user-session ABI_MIPS="n32 n64 o32" ABI_PPC="32 64" ABI_S390="32 64" ABI_X86="32 64 x32"}
     Installed versions:  1.10.12^t{tbz2}(16:52:52 02/03/17)(X -debug -doc -selinux -static-libs -systemd -test -user-session ABI_MIPS="-n32 -n64 -o32" ABI_PPC="-32 -64" ABI_S390="-32 -64" ABI_X86="64 -32 -x32")
     Homepage:            https://dbus.freedesktop.org/
     Description:         A message bus system, a simple way for applications to talk to each other
 # qlist -I sys-apps/dbus
sys-apps/dbus

Tony,

I can remove that, but I don't think that's what's causing my issue as it was one of the things I did after it started

1. Why are you building gentoo-systemd-integration? This should not be needed.

Try "equery d gentoo-systemd-integration"

2. virtual/tmpfiles requires either systemd or opentmpfiles.

"emerge -a1v opentmpfiles --nodeps" to eliminate that systemd requirement.

Those two may solve this.

If you have anything in package.use for dbus, make sure it is -systemd not systemd.

BTW, --nodeps is generally not to be used, but when the dependency tree for virtuals is honked up, it helps a lot.

Sorry, but again, don't forget ". /etc/profile" Sometimes on a system that's really messed up, I have to reboot to make sure that portage reads everything fresh.

If the advice so far does not solve your problem, please show us all your currently active package.use settings. The output you showed so far indicates that Portage wants sys-apps/dbus[systemd], but nothing shown so far explains why.

The file/(files in directory) /etc/portage/package.use should be:

Code:
category/package useflags

so you'd need to get rid of all systemd:

*/* -systemd

Or you can mask in /etc/portage/profile/package.use.mask

*/* systemd

Or just USE="-systemd" in make.conf . Use one of these and don't specify it multiple times (like specifying -systemd for dbus and also for every other individual package as well as */* - just once for */* is sufficient), if you do so this will confuse portage and all of us here, which I suspect is what's happening.

I just tested all these variations which seems to work with "equery uses sys-apps/dbus" - which if I let it actually build this way would utterly break my systemd machine... I still think you have one of these settings either in the wrong sense, commented out, or have the wrong package. Since most of you here are probably anti-systemd I'd expect to see "*/*" to apply the systemd USE flag in one sense or another to deselect the application to all packages (or -systemd in USE).

Also note that there is this "circular dependency" between dbus[systemd] and systemd, having one want to install will get the other to install.

Agreed, the verbatim (pastebin if large) posting of make.conf and the package.use* files would be helpful, in case there are if/then, erroneous comments, or using the wrong sense as right now it's still saying you want USE=systemd . Again on my OpenRC boxes, all I have is the negative USE flag in make.conf and the package mask which was sufficient to prevent systemd from getting installed. (I'm not using eudev however, just using regular udev.)

Well I think/thought I had found it...

Code:

# ls /etc/portage/package.use/
cairo              doxygen            gtk+               harfbuzz           imagemagick-tools  iputils            moc                sox                texlive            tt-rss             vte
dbus               gdk-pixbuf         handbrake          imagemagick        imlib2             keybinder          php                sylpheed           texlive-core       vlc
# cat /etc/portage/package.use/dbus
sys-apps/dbus -systemd
# grep -R systemd /etc/portage/package.use
/etc/portage/package.use/vte:# required by sys-auth/polkit-0.113::gentoo[-systemd]
/etc/portage/package.use/vte:# required by sys-auth/polkit-0.113::gentoo[-systemd]
/etc/portage/package.use/vte:>=sys-auth/pambase-20150213 systemd
/etc/portage/package.use/vte:# required by sys-apps/systemd-233-r1::gentoo
/etc/portage/package.use/vte:# required by sys-auth/pambase-20150213::gentoo[systemd]
/etc/portage/package.use/vte:>=sys-apps/dbus-1.10.12 systemd
/etc/portage/package.use/dbus:sys-apps/dbus -systemd
# grep -R dbus /etc/portage/package.use
/etc/portage/package.use/vte:>=sys-apps/dbus-1.10.12 X
/etc/portage/package.use/vte:>=media-video/vlc-2.2.4 dbus
/etc/portage/package.use/vte:>=dev-libs/glib-2.48.2 dbus
/etc/portage/package.use/vte:>=net-print/cups-2.1.4 dbus
/etc/portage/package.use/vte:>=sys-apps/dbus-1.10.12 systemd******
/etc/portage/package.use/dbus:sys-apps/dbus -systemd

It looks like vte was updated to require it. I had tried to install gnome-terminal or started too...doesn't look like I ever finished but I may have ran the dispatch-conf. I wanted to compare it to my favorite terminator. I think was added to use then...

I try and save install logs...

Code:

# cat /root/installed/gnome-terminal

* IMPORTANT: config file '/etc/portage/package.use/vte' needs updating

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies
 * IMPORTANT: 3 news items need reading for repository 'gentoo'.
 * Use eselect news read to view new items.

 * See the CONFIGURATION FILES and CONFIGURATION FILES UPDATE TOOLS
 * sections of the emerge man page to learn how to update config files.
... done!

Would you like to add these changes to your config files? [Yes/No]
 * IMPORTANT: 2 config files in '/etc/portage' need updating.
 * See the CONFIGURATION FILES and CONFIGURATION FILES UPDATE TOOLS
 * sections of the emerge man page to learn how to update config files.

I had none of these settings that forbade systemd until this troubleshooting began nor was it ever installed. I wish I had, it would have saved me all this (the former not the later).

I tried to remove the requirement in vte but it didn't seem to take...even after a reboot.

now /etc/portage/package.use/vte

https://paste.pound-python.org/show/tXGKQuuwzrjHLc9gX8SC/

P.S. Sorry bout the delayed response but I got overwhelmed with other stuff

I'd suggest you to scrub your USE files and remove any lines that has systemd in it.
Watch out for pambase[systemd] and of course remove the extraneous dbus[systemd] - both of which were probably generated by almost installing systemd itself.

x11-libs/vte does not (or no longer) have (has) a dbus[systemd] requirement, likely it was caused by somehow triggering systemd to install.

IMHO the automatic "update" of USE files feature of portage causes more problems than if one manually fixes the USE problems...

I had just missed this one... already removed the vte

/etc/portage/package.use/vte:>=sys-apps/dbus-1.10.12 systemd

it seems to be working now.

I came from freebsd... but most of the use flags were set @ compile time...via ncurses, not really sure what the exact equivalent is or if there is one.

Anyway, I'll be more careful with the automatic updates. I was just going with the ...suggested? updates

I believe this one is fixed!!!

Thank You Everyone...

Thanks eccerr0r... I did miss that one!
